-WASHING MACHINE.
No. 361,311. Patented Apf. 19, 1887-.

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIQE.
ALFORD LEWIS 'MONTAGUE, OF DUNKIRK, NEIV YORK.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,311, dated April 19, 1887.
Application filcd December 10, 1886. Serial No. 22 ,170. (No modehi To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEoRD LEWIS MN- TAGUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunkirk, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WashingMachines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference'marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of my improved washingmachine; Fig.-
movable or traveling beater D, which is in the form of an isosceles triangle and provided with roller d at the top.
E E are slats in the ends of the box A; and Frepresents the course of the water as the box is rocked back and forth.
The operation is as follows: The usual sup ply of hot water andsoap-suds being poured into the box, the clothes are arranged on both sides of the beater D and the hinged covers latched down. The clothes, being saturated with soap and water, are squeezed and pounded by the beater as the box moves up and down upon opposite sides. As the clothes move from one side the vacuu m thus created is filled by air rushing in through the pipe on that side, while this air, which permeates the clothes and becomes loaded with impurities, is expelled on the return movement of the beater and box. By this means the yellowing of clothes, to which so much exception is taken, may be entirely prevented.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
In a washing-machine, the arc-shaped box A, pivoted at its middle on a frame, B, having an air-pipe, a at each end, and provided with the inside end slats, E E, in combination with a triangular traveling beater, D, having one roll to bear upon the top of box and two to bear upon the bottom, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. J osEPH HoELLIe, I
ALBERT WIOHNAN.
