Be it known that I, WILLIAM ALGERNON EDE-OLEND'INNEN, surgeon dentist, a subjectA preferably of an elliptic section,having three similar holes formed in it, two of Which lie opposite one another about the conjugate or minor diameter of the ellipse, while theother passes through the outer wall of chamber. One of said holes is designed to receive the endof mouthpiece, another the end4 of bowlstem, and the third a movable plug. The end parts of the mouthpiece and bowl stems, or the bosses formed about the holes, project far enough into the chamber to *formA traps to retain and so preventany of the liquefied products of smoked ,tobacco leaving the chamber and passing to the smokers mout-h or returning to the bowl-stem, no matter in what position the pipe is being smoked or the person smoking is reclining. Said bowl and mouthpiece stems andthe plug may be interchangedv or be affixed in any of the aforesaid holes, and hence stems of various forms may be made up.v Further,

said chamber is designed to hold a small quantity of Water or other suitable liquid or spirit which will cool and purify smoke, or in place of theliquid some absorbent substancesuch as sponge, cotton, wool, or pumice made up preferably in the form of small balls--may be placed in the chamber. The third hole, or the one which receives the movable plug, is utilized as a way through which to pour in the liquid or to place in the absorbent substance and for cleaning-out purposes. If so desired, short .junction-pieces may be employed to connect the bowl-stem and mouthpiece with the elliptical-section chamber, and

l further, for some constructions of the chamber the plug-hole, may be dispensed with and the cleaning and filling be done through either the holder-stem or mouthpiece-holes, -and in such case the holes should not be provided with internal bosses. Again, when the chamber is made intwo separable parts it may be vtaken apart for cleaning purposes, and in such cases the internal.' trap-bosses can be retained..

The invention will now be described aided by a reference to the accompanying drawings, throughout which like letters will refer to the corresponding parts. 4

Figure l is a longitudinal sectional View of. a pipe with a bent stem having my invention attached to it and showing both the bowl and mouthpiece stem nipples fittingdirect into the holes in the trap-bosses and the third hole provided with a movable plug. Fig. 2 is a 'longitudinal section of a pipe with a straight stem; but in this instance the bowl-stem is connected with the elliptic-section chamber by a junction-piece and the inwardly-projecting stems form the trap. Fig. 3 is also a 1ongitudinal sectional view of a pipe, but showing the mouthpiece-stem nipple arranged in the hole at right angles to the bowl-stemv and I with fthe hole opposite the bowl-stem closed with a movable plug.

. ln Figs. l, 2, and 3, Ais the chamber, pref` erably of the elliptical form shown, having within it, as shown in Figs. l and 3, bosses d a, arranged axially opposite one another about the conjugate diameter of the ellipse, the holes ct in which are bored to the same size as the hole 0,2, which is shown lying at about right angles to the holes d. As shown in Fig. l, one of said holes is designed to receive the nipple b of the bowl-stem B, another to receive lthe nipple c of the mouthpiecestem C, and the third to receive the movable plug D. The end parts of said bosses a or of I the nipple-.stems within the chamber lie .a sufficient distance apart from one another to prevent the liquid or moisture being drawn from one nipple to the other by suction, While tain passing to the smokers mouth, as hereinbefore explained.

The water, spirit, or liquid within the chamber A cools the smoke as the latter expands and liberates the nicotin therein, and hence the smoke is cooled and condensed prior to its reaching the mouth. Also the liquid catches the tobacco products and prevents their solidifying and clinging to the wall of chamber, thereby allowing the latter to be more readily cleansed, emptied, and replenished, or when absorbent balls are placed in the chamber they take up the nicotin and other moisture. As will be seen on the drawings, the said chamberA is made separate from the pipe-stems, and its inWardlyp1'ojecting trap-bosses at are preferably made as a fixture Within it. Again, the chamber A may be made either of vulcanite, Celluloid, glass, porcelain, clay, or metal.

In Fig. 2 my invention is shown applied to a pipe having a straight stem, the chamber A being connected with the bowl-stem B by a junction-piece E, having two nipples, one fitting the socket of bowl-stern B and the other, b, the hole a in Wall ot chamber A, the inwardly-projecting nipple of the bowlstem junction-piece and the nipple of mouth piece thus forming the necessary traps. ln this viewthe chamber is shown with absorbent balls in itin place of the liquid.

In Fig. 3 the mouthpiece C of pipe is shown curved, and its nipple c enters the chamber A through the hole u2, the other axial hole a being closed With the plug D.

It will be noticed that the stem c of mouthpiece C projects far enough into the cha-mber to form the liquid-trap.

It will be obvious that the chamber A may be made of other forms approximating the elliptical section shown and that the third or cleaning hole t2 may be formed at any convenient position through wall of chamber between the holes a in order to accommodate the design andforln of stems which are to be used. Also the nipple-stems maybe screwed into chamber A in place of being tapered and forced into position', as hereinbefore described.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. ln an article of the class described, the combination with the elliptical chamber having openings located on its minor axis and a single opening on its major axis, of a bowl, mouthpiece, and plug inserted in said openings, substantially as described.

2. In an article of the class described, the combination with the bowl-mouthpiece, and pl-ug,a chamber having three similaropenings, for receiving interchangeably the nipples of the bowl, mouthpiece and plug, substantially as described.
