KNIFE ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE EDMUND ORos- LEY, acitizen of the United States, and a resident ofAlbion, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Knife Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to an attachment for pocket-knives or for other devices having blades by which pencils may be conveniently and effectually sharpened. The invention also embodies Various novel features, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.

This specification is an exact description of several forms of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a detail perspective view showing one form of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a modification. Fig. 3 is a perpective view showing a further modification of the invention, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 2.

The invention comprises a shield at in the form of a tube tapered transversely so as to fit over the blade of a knife. This tube a has a thumb-screw 1) working therein, by which screw the tubeis fastened securely to the blade of the knife. In the relatively sharp edge of the shield a is formed a notch a, which is preferably triangular in form, but which may, if desired, have any other shape. This notch a exposes the blade of the knife. With this device the part of the blade exposed by the notch a may be used to sharpen a pencil, while the shield a will dispose the blade properly with respect to the pencil, so as to give the blade the proper inclination with respect to the lead. This action is due to a large extent to the transverse taper of the tubular shield.

In order to prevent dulling the blade of the knife by engagement with the tapered edge of the shield to, said shield may be split at the ends of its relatively sharp edge, and lugs or lips (6 turned back to lie opposite each other, as shown in Fig. 1, thus forming grippers between which the sharp or thin portion of the blade of the knife is moved, these grippers engaging the sides of the knifeblade and preventing the edge thereof from striking the shield a and dulling said edge. As shown in Figs. 2 and at, the same effect is obtained by turning in the end edges of the tube, as indicated at a thus forming opposing gripping-surfaces engaging the side of the blade, and holding this edge away from the shield proper. This construction also enables the device to be held on the blade without using the thumb-screw.

As illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, the sharp or thin edge of the shield a may be formed with a minor notch a which serves also to expose the edge of the knife-blade, and thus facilitates cutting the nails of ones fingers. Also the shield may have a roughened or filing surface a formed on one of these faces, as illustrated in Fig. 3, this surface being adapted to be used for filing and rubbing the fingernails.

Various other changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of the invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An attachment for knife-blades, comprising a shield adapted to embrace the blade of a knife, said shield having a major and a minor notch therein exposing the edge of the blade.

2. An attachment for knives, comprising a shield adapted to embrace the knife-blade and tapered transversely toward the edge of 0 the blade, said shield having a major and a minor notch in its sharp edge to expose the edge of the blade.

3. An attachment for knives, said attachment comprising a shield adapted to embrace 5 the blade of a knife and said shield having a rough or filing portion formed thereon.

4. A knife attachment, comprising a shield adapted to inclose the blade and tapered transversely toward the edge for the purpose speciroo fied, said shield having a notch in its thin edge, the notch extending inward to expose turned inward to lie against the side faces of the blade to assist in holding the shield in place, said end edges ranging transversely of the blade.
