SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,790, dated November 24, 1903. Application led August 26. 1902. l Serial No. 121,027. (No model.)
To LM w/wm, t may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH D. PALDI, acitizen of the United States, residing at Brockway, in the county of -St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts,'of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.l y
, The invention relates to improvements in a fencepost; and itis the object of the invention to obtain a construction which may be cheaply manufactured, which is durable and strong, and one which may be quickly placed in position in the fence.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combinationl of parts with particular reference to the construction of the base, the means for supporting and securing the post proper thereon, the means for attaching the guys to the base, and other details of construction more specifically set forth in the claims.
In the drawings,vFigure l is a perspective viewof the fence, showing three posts of different construction all embodying features of my invention. Fig, 2 is an elevation of one construction of the post. Fig. 3 is a similar view of another construction of the post. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the base of the post, illustrating the means for attaching the guys. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section through the base of the post, showing the guyfastening means applied in a slightly-.different manner. Fig. 6 is avertical section thereof. Fig. 7 is a perspective View of a modiiication of the base togetherwith the means for attaching the guys. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a securing device for the upper section of the post with the base. Fig. 9 is an elevation showing means of attaching the cap to the post. Fig. l0 illustrates a bent wire previous to being twisted to form the guys. Fig. 11 shows the upper end of the completed sur. Y
Generally described, my -improved fencepost comprises a base-section formed of a cementitioussubstance, such asvitri fied clay,
This base A may be As'shown in Fig. 2,
tile, or artificial stone. of any suitable shape.
it comprises a portiona., having a fiat top b and provided with an overhanging ange 0.1 It isalso provided near the bottom with a laterallyextending flange or portion CZ.
The object of this-lower flange is to prevent kc is for the purpose of anchoring the guyclamps, which will be hereinafter described.
B is a cap seated upon the top of the base 'A and having downwardly-extending flanges c e, which hook over the edges of flange c. This cap may be of any desired form, but as shown in the drawings it comprises a flat bar of metal bent to form the hooks e. Centrally of the bar a recess f is formed, adapted to receive the lower end of the upper section C of the post. This upper section is formed in variousways, according-to the peculiar kind of post which is desired, the same being preferably formed of resilient material for a purpose to ,be hereinafter set forth. Thus for the end. post I preferablyemploy anglebars, while for the intermediate post iat or square bars are fused. These intermediate posts are also preferably of two forms. One
employed is av flat bar having a greater Width y than thickness, the other uses a small square bar. in the fence illustrated in Fig. l and may respectively be described by the reference-letters D, E, and F.
At the upper end of the section C of the post is arrangeda cap G. This'is preferably made of cast metal and may be secured to the section C by providing the latter with an upwardly-extending. tongue g, engaging a recess h of the cap. Upon opposite sides of this cap guys H are securedwhich extend downward to the base A and are secured thereto by the following construction.
I is aband or strappreferably formed of a plurality of sections, each'terminating in outwardly-extendin g ears vl. These sections when placed together will completely surround the base A and in the construction shown in Fig. 2 will be immediatelybelow the flange c. The ear I will extend outwardly beyond the flange 'c and adjacent to eachother, and these vears are apertured for theV passage of the clamping-bolt J. The bolts J perform the double function of clamping the strap I upon the post and also forming an anchor for the These three modifications are all shown.
guys H. These guys may be formed of rods or wires, the construction varying with the peculiar character of post. Thus for the post D and E metallic rods are used which are provided at their lower ends with eyes I7', through which the bolis J pass, said eyes being placed intermediate the ears 'L' on the strap I. At their upper ends the guys are each provided with a threaded portion, which passes through m, apertued in the cap G and has engaged therewith a clamping-nut K.
lVith the construction just described it will be understood that the section C of the post is firmly secured to the base A and cap G by means of the guys II, which at their lower ends are secured by the bolts J to the straps I and at their upper ends by the nuts K to the cap G. The section C is also held from lateral displacement by reason of a metallic cap B on said base, having the fianges e c, which hook over the edges of the base. Obviously the flanges e may be four in number, as clearly illustrated in the end posts of Fig. 1 of the drawings.
In the construction of the post F it rests upon a washer F on the top of the base. The guys are preferably formed of a plurality of strands twisted together, as at I-I. The three strands of this guy are preferably each formed of a single piece of wire bent into a loop, with the ends of the wire overlapping at a point intermediate of the ends of the guy. The loop thus formed and shown in Fig. 10 is then twisted to produce the guy illustrated in Fig. Il, said guy having loops or eyes k formed at each end. The loop 7c at the lower end is engaged with the clamp-bolt J and at the upper end of loop 7c engages with the hook L, which has a threaded end passing through apertured cap and engaging with the nut K. lith this construction of guy the strands of the fence may be attached thereto by insert ing securing-loops M, of wire, between the twists of the guy adjacent to each of the strands and by then twisting said loop end around said strands. The result will be that the strands will be thus securely fastened to the guys. To further strengthen the post, the guys II are preferably bound to the section C of the post by means of loops N, embracing both the guys and said section, as shown in Fig. l. Two of said loopsA are shown, the lower one, N', being slightly modified by twisting the wires of the loop intermediate of the guy to the central section C. In order to take up the expansion and con traction of the guys, due to variations in temperature, I preferably bend the post F slightly and then tighten up the guys to hold it bent. The guys attached to the post on the side toward which it bends being tightened and held under tension while the guys extending in the direction from which the post is bent serving to prevent any further bending of the post, the tension will thus tend to keep the guys tight at all times.
In place of the construction of base illustrated in Fig. 2 I may employ the modified construction shown in Fig. 7. The latter is especially adapted for a cheap construction of post, as the base thus modified may be formed in a brick or tile machine. As shown, the base A' is formed without the flange c, and to then secure the clamp in position a recess p is formed in the base While still in a a semiplastic condition. This may be accomplished by a suitable tool for pinching it or in any other desired way. The recess p thus formed is adapted to receive the straps I', which are then clamped in position in the same manner described in connection with the construction shown in Fig. 2.
lVhat I claim as my invention is 1. A fencepost comprising a base having an outwardlyextended Aflange at its upper end, a metallic cap for the base comprising a fiat surface and elongated projections at each of its sides struck down to form flanges for overlapping the flanges of the base, an upper post-section seated upon the cap, and guys for securing the upper section to the base.

G. A fence-post comprising aba-se, an upper post F of resilient metal seated thereon, a cap IOO IIO
upon the top of the metal post, guy-rods connecting the cap and the base, the post being slightly bent and maintained in its bent condition by the guy-rods, whereby tension is constantly maintained upon said guy-rods regardless of changes in atmosphere.
7. A fence-post comprising a base having a shoulder at its upper end, an adjustable strap surrounding said base below said shoulder formed of a plurality of sections having their adjacent ends terminating in outwardly-projecting ears and bolts passing through said ears for securing said sections together, an upper post-section seated upon said base, and a pluralityof guys for said upper section secured at their lower ends to said bolts, the said bolts forming a 4detachable securing means for the guys.
