ALBERT E. LVYCAN, OF PARIS, ILLINIS.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,102, dated July l, 1899.V v
' Application led October 29, 1898. ySerial No. 694,970. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/:
Beit known that I, ALBERT E. LYCAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Edgar and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Fence, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates Vto improvements in fences.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of wire fences,`1nore especially the means for anchoring the ends of a fence, and to provide an anchoring device which will permit the fence-wires-to be readily adjusted to maintain them at the de sired tension.
The invention consists in the'construction.
and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective responding parts in both the figures of theY drawings.
l designates a series of horizontal fence- Y Wires,preferably composed of twisted strands;
Y but single wires may be employed, as will be readily understood, and they are supported at intervals by vertical stays 2, constructed of Wire and preferably twisted around the horizontal fence-wires, as shown. The ends 3 of the fence-wires are secured to an attachment bar or post 4, which is vcapable of adjustment to tighten the fence-wires si1nultaneously, and the--said wires', which lmay be permanently attached to the vertical bar or post 4, can be connected with the saine by any desired form of wireastretcher, so that the wires may be adjusted independently of one another.r The attachment bar or post is provided at intervals with perforations arranged in pairs, and the ends of the fence-wires are strung through the perforations and twisted, as shown.
The vertical bar or ypost et is suspended above the surface of the ground .by means of inclined anchoring rods or wires 6 and 7, extending upward and inward from an anchor the nuts 13. fence-wires may be drawn to the desired teni 8 and passing through upper and lower eyes 9 and 10 of a post ll. The'anchor 8, which may be constructed of any suitable materialsuch as stone, metal, or the like-is embedded 'inthe groundbeyond the fence, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings, and the lower ends of the anchoring .rods may be connected with the anchor by any suitable means, such as extending them through a perforation ofthe anchor or forming an eye or coil for embracing the latter.
The leyes 9 and 10 of the post ll are preferably formed by staples, and the converging bracing-rods, which extend beyondl the staples, yare, adjustably connected with the barv or post et by horizontal rods or bolts l2 and nuts 13. The rods or bolts 12 are provided at their out-er ends with eyes 14, through which the adjacent ends of the bracing wires or rods are passed and secured by twisting them around the body portions of the bracing-rods, as shown. The other ends of the horizontal rods or bolts 12 are threaded and extend through openings of the bar or post 4, washers being` interposed between the same and By adjusting the lnuts 13 the sion,
The post 1l forms a portion of asection l5 of the fence, and the said fence-section l5 is composed of thelpost ll and an end post 16 and a series of horizontal bars Vor rails 17, which project beyond the post l1 to close the space between the same and the post or bar et. The projecting portions 1S of the rails 17 are of sufiicientlength to permit the neces- The anchoring means, which are exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, are especially adapted for use in connection with wire fences where the Wires are under tension and exert a severe longitudinal strain on the holding devices. The anchoring-rods,
which extend through the eyes 9 and l0, are
IOO
enable the fence-wires to be simultaneously stretched and maintained at the desired tension.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction, such as varying the construction o f the means for adj ustably connecting the anchoring rods or wires with the attachment bar or post 4, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What is claimed isl. The combination of a fence-post provided with eyes arranged near its top and bottom, the downwardly-converging longitudinal anchoring-rods passing through the eyes of the fence-post and provided at their upper ends with adjusting devices, a movable bar or post 4 connected to the adjusting devicesand suspended by the same above the surface of the ground, and fence-wires connected to the bar or post 4, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of a fence-post provided with eyes, the downwardlyconverging longitudinal anchoring-rods extending through the eyes and having their outer ends embedded in the ground,.an anchor connected yto the outer ends of the rods, fence-wires, and
the movable bar or post Ll, having the fencewires attached to it and adjustably connected with the upper ends of the anchoring-rods, substantially as described.
The combination of a fence-section composed of fence-posts and horizontal rails, the latter being extended beyond the inner fencepost, eyes mounted on the inner fence-post, the downwardly-converging longitudinal anchoring-rods passing through the eyes and having their outer ends embedded in the ground, said rods being provided at their inner or upper ends with adjusting devices, a movable bar or post suspended by the said adjusting devices, and fencewires connected with the movable bar or post, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT E. LYOAN.
