LOUIS H. MARBURG, .OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, SSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND C. L. MARBURG, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patentino. 74,395, dated February 11, isos.
IMPROVEMENT IN PACKING TOBACCO.
TO ALL VI-IOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I,.LOU1s H. MARBURG, of the city and county of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Packing Tobacco and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and c xact description of the sanne, sucicnt to enable'those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make use of it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which r Figure 1 represents one method, and- Figure 2 another method of applying the elastic band.
This invention 'relates to the packing of smoking-tobacco in small bags or pouehes,.and consists in applying an elastic band to said bags, whereby they close automatically, and by the use of'which they can be instantly opened without the necessity of untying a knot. i
In the drawings, A represents the bag or pouch, filled with cut tobacco. One of the bags, shown in iig. Il, is tied at the upper corners, and has a slit extending across its top from one of the .corner knots to the other. The bag, along one edge ofthe slit, laps over the other edge, and an elastic circular strap or band, B, is attached to the overlapping edge. The bag is fastened by drawing the overlapping edge over the other, and then passing the circular elastic band around the bag, in the manner clearly represented in fig. 1.V In fig. 2, a circular aperture is made in the top of the bag. The edge of the cloth around this aperture is gathered, and a small `elastic circular band is attached to it, or run in around it, in the manner clearly shown at B, g. 2. At one point in the edge ofthe aperture the band appears in red.
By the use of an elastic band constructed and applied in the manner described, the bag can, at any moment, be opened instantly without the necessity of untying a single knot, or unfastening a clasp, it being only necessary to draw asunder the edges of the slit or aperture in its top. When the person using ithaswithdrawn what tobacco he wants from the bag, it closes, and remains closely fastened together until he desires to open it again. In this manner not only is the time necessary for untying and tying the bag saved, but also the danger of the knots becoming unfastened, and spillingl the contents of the bag in the pocket or elsewhere, is avoided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The method of packing tobacco, above described, consisting of the circular elastic band B, attached to a bag, A, in the manner shown, and operating to close it automatically, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
