AM. f/lm-LITHUFMFH/C (50.17, XMSEO/M/E'S PROCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J GEN BOWERS, OF BROOKVILLE, ILLINOIS.
lMPROVEMENT IN BAG-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,593, dated September 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BOWERS, of Brookville, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Grain-Bag Tie, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a small rectangular piece of thick leather, or any equivalent stiff flexible substance, with an eyelet near one end and a slit therefrom to one end, which is fastened to the bag by one end of a cord long enough to wind several times around the sack and around the coils of itself, between the leather and the sack, and then introduced to the eyelet through the slit, where it is kept by the knot in the end, all as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bag with my improved fastening applied to it, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the leather piece and plan of the cord as it appears when the bag is fastened.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the aforesaid piece of thick leather or other equivalent flexible substance, and B the cord. This leather piece has an eyelet, (J, and is slit therefrom to the end, as shown at D, and is fastened by one end of the cord to the bag E, as shown by the tie a b,- thence the cord passes through the bag at d, and in tying the bag is wound several times around it, as shown by the coils F, and is then coiled around the tie a 12, between the leather piece and the bag, as shown by the coils G, and the end H, with the knot, is introduced to the eyelet 0 through the slit D, and thereby made fast in a very efficient manner, and so that the tying and untying of a knot is entirely avoided.
There is an advantage gained in having the two holes through which the tie is fastened to the bag independent of the slot and eyelet which holds the free end of the cord, as will be readily seen. Thereis also an advantage in the flexibility of the leather over wood and other materials, as well as in its durability, cheapness, and the facility with which it may be adjusted or replaced when worn out, &c.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The leather piece A, slitted at D,-and having eyelet 0, combined with a cord, B, coiled, tied, and applied to the bag, as described.
a JOHN BOWERS.
