L. J. SICKE. CONSTRUCTION OF COLUMNS UR POSTS.- APPLICA'EIONPIL ED AUG. 29. 1903.

PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS J. SIOKE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CONSTRUCTION OF COLUMNS OR POSTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,765,0lated November 10, 1903.
Application filed August 29', 1903. Serial No. 171,166. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS J. SICKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Columns orPosts for Buildings, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to columns and posts used in the construction of buildings of various kinds and classes, and particularly to columns and posts made of wood; and the object thereof is to provide a column or post of this class and for this purpose which is hollow and composed of separate parts locked together in such a manner as to provide a strong and durable column or post and one which will not split or crack in use or after being placed in position; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a'col-1 umn or post of the class and for the purpose specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully'disclosed in thefollowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the sepa-. rate parts of .myimprovement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a transverse section of a columnor post made according to myinvention, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of the separate parts of the column or post and showing the separate parts in'position to be connected.
In the practice of myinvention I provide a column or post which is composed of a plurality of main longitudinal pieces or members a, eight of which are shown in Fig. 1, and two locking pieces or members I) and c, eight of each of which are also employed. The main pieces or members a are segmental in cross-section on their outer sides and plain or straight in cross-section on their inner sides, and at each lateral side thereof and adjacent to the inner sides thereof are extended longitudinal members a having outwardly and inwardly directed longitudinal grooves a and (t whereby longitudinal locking-heads a are produced. The outer locking members 0 are also in the form of construction shown segmental in cross-section on their outer surfaces; but the lateral sides thereof are provided with longitudinal tongues 0 which fit in the grooves a of two of the abutting pieces or members a when the latter are placed together, and the interlocking members 5 are provided at their lateral sides with outwardlydirected longitudinal tongues hfiwhich fit in the grooves of of two of the abutting members a. when the latter are placed together. These parts are also formed in practice so as to fit snugly together when connected, as shown in Fig. 1, and the locking members 5 and c are preferably provided separately of their inner or adjacent faces with inwardly directed portions 11 and c and the corresponding parts of the locking-heads 01 0f the members a are correspondingly formed. My invention is not limited, however, to the exact shape in cross-section of the three separate parts which compose the column or post, and other forms may be adopted, and instead of making the column or post particularly cylindrical in cross-section on the outer side thereof the same may be fluted or grooved longitudinally, or it may be made octagonal or of other form in cross-section.
When the parts are properly made and snuglyfitted, they will remain in position, and the column or post will be strong and durable and will not crack or split, as is frequently the result when said columns or posts are made of asingle piece; but the separate parts, however, may be connected by glue or similar material, if desired.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A column or post composed of separate longitudinal members interlocked together, said members consisting of three different styles, a plurality of each otwhich is employed, one style of said members constituting the body portion of the column or post and the other two styles serving as looking members, one I ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 27th set of said locking members being counterday of August, 1903.
sunk in the outer side of the column or post and the otherset being on theinner side there- LOUIS SIOKE' 5 of, substantially as shown and described. Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as F. A. STEWART,
myinvention I have signed my name, in pres- C. E. MULREANY.
