PATENT OFFICE.
MARY ANN DORLING AND WILLIAM DORLING, OF MIDDLESBROUGH,
' ENGLAND.
TAPE NEEDLE OR THREADER.
SPEGIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,066, dated November 3, 1903.
Application filed March 18, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, MARY ANN DORLING and WILLIAM DORLING, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 2 Myrtle street, Middlesbrough, in the county of York, England, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Tape Needles or Threaders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new or improved tape needle or threader, the object being to provide a simple needle or threader constructed in such a manner that when the tape has been inserted there is no risk of it being accidentally pulled out, which frequently ocours with tape-needles of the ordinary form when threading tapes or the like into casings or garments of various kinds, with the result that the work has often to be done over again.
In carrying this invention into practical effect this new or improved needle or threader consists of a bar or strip, preferably of metal, of the required size, furnished with a perforation or opening toward one end, within which is pivoted a pointed tongue or pin in such a manner that when the tape or the like is passed through the hole or perforation at one side of the pointed tongue or pin and returned at the other the pin or tongue engages the tape or the like and prevents it from being accidentally withdrawn.
In order that this invention may be more fully understood, it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan of the device; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line a: a; of Fig. 1, showing the manner in which the tape or the like is engaged.
The device comprises, as shown, a flat bar or strip a, formed preferably with a tapered extremity b, toward which a hole or perforation 0 is formed containing a pivoted pointed tongue 01' pin d, while an indent or recess e Serial No. 148,383. (No model.)
extends from the perforation c and is designed to receive the extremity of the pin or tongue d, so that it lies flush with or below the surface of the strip or bar a.
In practice the tape or the like f, Fig. 2, is passed upthrough the hole or perforation c at one side of the pin or tongue d, then over the latter, and returned through the hole or perforation c at the other side. Then by drawing the tape taut the pin or tongue pierces the tape and holds it firmly, so that there is no chance of it being accidentally withdrawn.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new,v and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a tape-needle, the combination, with a needle-bar having a hole at one end portion and a recess in its surface on one side of the said hole, of va tongue provided with a sharp point for penetrating the tape, said tongue being pivoted to the said bar crosswise in the said hole and engaging with the said recess so that no part of it projects above the surface of the bar when the needle is in use.
2. In a tape-needle, the combination, with a needle-bar having a tapering extremity, a
perforation near its said extremity, and a recess in its surface extending longitudinally of the bar from the side of the said perfora- MARY ANN DORLING. WILLIAM DORLING.
