COMBINED TOILET AND ADVERTISING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 742,496, dated October 27, 1903.

Be it known that I, ALBERT A. Roor, a citizen of the United States, residing atBulfalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in a Combined Toilet and Advertising Device, of whichthe followingis a speci- This invention relates to an improved combined mirror and toilet-case and advertising device, and comprises a frame having a rod attached at its rear and advertising mechanism which is adapted to 'be operated by the movement of the rod to display the advertisements.

The invention also relates to certain .details of construction, all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter described and claimed,ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a section on line a a, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line b o, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a rear View of the device with the back cover removed to show the interior mechanism. Fig. 5 is a face View of one of the advertising-cards. Fig. 6 in an enlarged fragmentary section on line b b, Fig. 1, to show more clearly the position of the cards relatively to the windows.

In referring to the drawings for the details of construction like numerals designate like parts.

The main frame is preferably rectangular in form and consists of a front portion 1, provided with amirror 2 in its center, and a series of windows 3, extending entirely around the front portion 1,and a detachable rear cover 4. An upper plate 5, of metal or other suitable material, is securely fastened to the upper end of the rear of the main frame, as shown in Fig. 4, vand has a rod 6, pivoted to its center by a pivot-pin 7. At one end of the rod 6 a comb 8 is attached by a chain 9 or the like, and at the other end a brush 10 is attached by another chain 11, the purpose ofl which will be explained farther on. The plate 5 is fastened at its upper end to the main frame and at its lower end to a su pplementary frame 12, and a lower plate 13 is fastened at its upper end to the supplementary frame 12 Serial No. 162,527. and at its lower end to the main frame to hold the mirror rigidly in position against the cardboard or the like 14 and the outer protectingglass 15. This piece of cardboard 14 or a thin piece ofwood or any material that can be used for the purpose is placed back of the glass 15, in which openings are cut to form the windows 3 and the opening through which the mirror 2 isshown. While the opening through which the mirror is shown is preferably oval, it can be cut to any form desired.

' Two pieces of cardboard or the like cut to the substantially |:-shaped form shown in Fig. 5, which constitute the advertisementdisplay cards, are each composed of a vertical portion 16 and two horizontal portions 17, which extend from the upper and lower eX- tremities of the vertical portion 16. These cards are slidably mounted in the vertical and horizontal depressions 18 and 19, formed between the frame 12 and the raised portions 20, extending from the main frame. These portions 2O may be of separate pieces of material and fastened to the frame in any wellknown way or may be integral with the frame. The top and bottom depressions 19 are formed wider than the side depression 18 to allow for the upward and downward sliding movement of the cardboards.

The -shaped cardboards 16 have two series of advertisements printed in dierent or contrasting colors, the colors alternating with each other, in the spaces indicated by the numerals 21 and 2.2, the spacesnumbered 21 being of one color and the spaces numbered 22 of another color, and they are arranged so that they will come opposite the windows 3. Lugs or projections 23, of any suitable material, are glued or otherwise secured to the portions 2O of the main frame and the supplementary frame 12 to holdA the'advertisingcards in position against the windows 3. Lugs or projections 24 are fastened to the frame 12 to hold the mirror rmly in the frame.

A block of wood 25 is glued ,to the upper ends of the E-shaped card 16, as vshown in Figs. 4 and 6. A pivotingpin 26" is fastened in one of the upper corners of the blocks 25, on which the rod 6 is fastened. The-portion 2O is cut away, as shown yat 27 in Fig. 4, to allow for vertical movement of the rod.

Cleats 2S are secured on each side of the inclosing case for the purpose of holding the removable rear cover in place.

The operation of the device is as follows: When the comb is raised, the weight of the brush pulls the rod down on that side and moves the cardboard on one side downward and on the other side upward, changing the advertisements and displaying one series of advertisements, all of one color, through the vertical rows of windows. When the comb is dropped and the brush taken up, it reverses the movement of the cardboards, the weight of the comb pulling the rod or lever down on that side and displaying another series of advertisements, all of another color, with one exception. At the top horizontal row of windows both series of advertisements are printed in the same color 0n one of the cardboards 16, as shown in Fig. 5, and of another color on the other cardboard 16, so that when advertisements are displayed through the top horizontal windows half of the windows on one side show one color and the other half on the other side another or contrasting color.

The Windows 3 are arranged in a substantially square or rectangular-shaped series around the mirror, and the [I-Shaped advertisement-displaying cards areslidably mounted in the rear of these windows with their upper and lower horizontal portions 17 projecting toward each other, so that one of the E-shaped cards is in the rear of one half of the Windows and the other is in the rear of the remaining half.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a device of the class described, a frame having a rectangular series of windows, a plurality of substantially [i2-shaped advertisement-displaying cards slidably mounted in the rear ofthe Windows and means for moving said cards.

2. In a device of the class described, a frame having a mirror, a rectangular series of windows around said mirror, a plurality of advertisement-displaying cards slidably mounted in the rear of the windows and having vertical and horizontal portions and a toilet device having means for moving said cards.

3. In a device of the class described, a frame having a series of windows, a plurality of substantially E-shaped advertisement-displaying cards slidably mounted in the rear of the windows and having a series of advertisements in alternate contrasting colors and means for moving said cards.

4. In a device of the class described, a frame having a series of windows, an advertisementdisplaying card in the rear of said windows, a substantially horizontal rod pivoted to the frame and operatively connected to the display-card so as to move said display-card when turning on its pivot in either direction, and toilet articles such as a comb and brush suspended from the ends of the rod, substantially as set forth.

5. In a device of the class described, a frame having a rectangular series of windows, two [-shaped cards for displaying ad vertisements slidably1 mounted in the rear of the windows, a rod pivoted to the frame and operatively connected to the display-cards, and toilet articles, such as a comb and brush, suspended by chains from the ends of the rod, substantially as set forth.
