PAINTERS HOOK. APPLICATION IILED APR. 11, 1903.

UNITED STATES Patented October 27, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
PAINTERS HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 742,417, dated October 27, 1903.
Application filed April 11,1903.
.To all whom, it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, JOHN HAMMARSTROM, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connepticut,-have invented a new and useful Painters Hook, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a hook for suspending a pail or can from a ladder, so that when it is engaged with the round of the ladder it will be locked thereon by the weight of the pail or can.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hook of the character indicated which is simple, cheap, and not likely. to .get out of order. 7
The invention consists of a body having means at one end for attaching it to the bail of a pail or can and provided at its other end with a hook for engaging the round of a lad der and a lock carried bythe body and locking the hook on the round of the ladder.
The invention also consists of the particular construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out inthe claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvemenflshowing its application. Fig.2 is a side elevation showing the hook locked. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the hook open. Fig. 4 is a front view of the hook. Fig. 5is a perspective. view of the body with. the latch removed,
and Figs. 6 and 7 are sectional viewson lines 66and77ofFig.4..
Referring to the drawings, A is the body of the device and B the latch, the body A formed of a single pieceof wire being bent upon' itself to form a hook a at one end. The members a a of the body extend parallel with each other and are provided with eyes 0, a intermediate of their ends and at their ends with hooks a a the said hooks extending inwardly toward each other, as clearly shown in the drawings.
The hook a is forengaging the round of a ladder and the hooks a a for engaging the bail of a pail or a can.
The latch B consists of a single piece of wire bent at one end into approximately U shape, the connecting member I) of which extends between the members a a of the body,
ScrialNo. 152,232. (No model.)
and the member 19 extends between the members of the hook or, while the member b is adapted to engage the end of the book, as
shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The member 12 is slightly bent or curved upwardly at 19 between the members of the hook a. From the end of the member b extends inwardly the member 12 to within a short distance of the memher 0; or of lthe body and is then bent at right angles to form a shank b The shank b extends loosely through the eyes a a of the body and is then bent between its members a a of the body to form a handle I) for oper ating the catch.
In operation, the parts being in the position shown in Fig. 3, the hook at is engaged with the round of a ladder, and then when the bail of a pail is engaged by the hooks a a the catch will be moved to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and the hook securely locked on the round of the ladder, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new,and desiret soc Letters Patent, is-
1. A hook for supporting pails and the like, comprising a body having a hook at one end and means atits other end for attachment to a pail, and a catch operated by the weight of the pail for closing the mouth of the hook, as specified.
2. A hook for supporting pails and the like, comprising a body having a hook at one end and means at its other end for attachment to a pail, and a catch mounted to slide on the body and automatically closing the mouth of the hook when a pail is suspended from the body, as specified.
3. A hook for supporting pails and the like, 0 comprising abody provided with ahook atone end and means at the other end for suspending a pail therefrom, and a catch sliding on the body and provided with oppositely-arranged members at one end, one of said mem- 5 bers being adapted to engage the end of the hook to close the same, as specified.
4.. A hook for supporting pails and the like, comprising a body having at one end a hook forward of the spaced member, and provided xoo at its other end with means for suspendinga pail therefrom, and a catch sliding on the body and having two approximately parallel members, one member extending between the members of the hook and the other adapted to engage the end of the hook, as specified.
5. A hook for supporting pails and the like, comprising a body provided at one end with a hook having spaced members and with guide-eyes, and a catch having a shank workingin the guide-eyes, and provided at its end with two approximately parallel members, one of which projects between the members of the hook and the other adapted to engage the end of the said hook, as specified.
6. A hook forsnpporting pails and the like, comprising a body provided at one end with
