Description

NITED STATES v Patented october 20,1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
WALLACE C. LYON, OF HYATTSVILLE, MARYLAND, AND KORT BERLE, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
METHOD OF CONSTRUC'TlNG FIREPROOFVPARTITIONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 742,045, dated October 20, 1903.
Application filed July 25 1903. Serial No. 166,983. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WALLACE C. LYON,
residing at Hyattsville, Prince George county,
Maryland, and KORT BERLE, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods o'f Constructing Fireproof Partitions; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and ,useful method of constructing ireproof partitions; and it consists in placing previously-prepared blocks or slabs of fireproof material in a bed of dry powder having a cementing quality when moistened and afterward applying moisture to the bedding, thereby causing the same to set and cement the blocks or plaster so placed to the base upon which the powder is placed.
In carrying out our method we propose, preferably, to form blocks with tongue-andgrooved edges, the grooves of the blocks or slabs adapted to receive the powder of the cementing material before the blocks are matched orinterlocked together and either moisten the interlocking tongue of the block which comes in contact with the powdered cementing material or lay up the blocks or 4 slabs with the cementing material intermediate the tongue and walled groove and afterward moistening the faces of the blocks adjacent to the joints, whereby the blocks may absorb the moisture sufficiently to cause the cementing material to set, thereby securely holding the blocks together.
Apparatus whereby the steps of our process are carried out is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis an elevation of blocks of masonry made up in accordance with the steps of our process. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of one of the blocks.
Referring to the various steps in our method, we first take blocks of Iireproof material A,
f cement of the powdered material to securely hold the blocks together, or the blocks may be matched together by tongue-and-groove connections, and after the partition is built up liquid may be sprinkled over the faces of the blocks adjacent to the joints, and as the blocks absorb the moisture and the latter comes in contact with the powdered material the same will set and securely cement the blocks together, it being within the province of our invention to apply the moisture in either of the ways referred to.
While it is our practice to employ plasterof-paris for-the cementing material, we do not confine ourselves to any particular cement, as any suitablekind which has the quality of setting when moistened may be employed.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A method of constructing fireproof partitions consisting of placing previously-prepared blocks of fireproof material in a bed of dry-powder having a cementing quality when moistened, and applying moisture to said bedding, thereby causing the powder to set and cement the blocks together, as set forth.
2. A method of construction of fireproof partitions consisting in placing previouslyprepared blocks in a bed of dry powder having a cementing, setting quality when moistened, and then applying moisture to the faces ofthe blocks, whereby the latter will absorb the moisture and cause the cementing powder to set and securely cement the blocks together, as set forth.
3. A method of iireproof construction for buildings consisting in forming blocks with IOC tongues and grooves, of inserting a powder In testimony whereof we hereunto aiiix our having a eementing, setting quality in the signatures in presence of two witnesses. joints betweensaid blocks, of interlocking T the blocks and applying moisture to the faces Lvl ON' 5 of the blocks adjacent to the joints, whereby the moisture absorbed by the blocks will Witnesses: cause the powdered material to set and oe- A.
