SCRUBBING-MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,787, dated October 20, 1903.

Application led May 27, 1902. Serial No. 109,139. (No model.)

Be it known that I, THOMAS GossAcK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belt. in the county of Cascade, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrubbing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which` it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to scrubbinginachines; and it has for its object to provide an improved mechanism of this nature which when propelled or drawn over thefloor or other surface to be cleaned will be operatedl with efficient results.

A further object of the invention is to provide a machine which will be cheap and simple of construction, further objects and advantages of the invention being understood from the following description.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the complete machine. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of Fig. 1, parts being in elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the machine in a plane above the arms of the brushes. Fig. 4 is a section ou line 4 4 of Fig. 2 looking downwardly.

Referring now to the drawings, the present machine comprises an axle 5, on which are` fixed the two traction- wheels 6 and 7, and between the traction-wheels are mounted upon the axle the two sleeves 8 and 9, which are spaced apart at their inner ends to accommodate a bevel gear-wheel 10, which is fixed upon the axle, and connected to the sleeves and projecting forwardly therefrom 'are the" l arms 11 and 12, between the forward ends of which is mounted the wheel 13.

On the sleeve 9 is mounted the lower end of a shaft 14, which extends vertically from the sleeve, and upon the squared upper por' tion of this shaft is engaged the socket-piece 15 at the lower end ,of a handle '16, which extends upwardly and rearwardly from the socket-piece and is provided at its upper end with the cross-bar 17.

Upon the lower cylindrical portion of the shaft 14 is rotatably mounted the sleeve 18,

which carries the bevel-gear 19, which meshes with the gear 10, so that as the machine is propelled the sleeve 18 is rotated. The sleeve 18 above the bevel-gear 19 is angular in crosssection, and upon this angular portion is slidably mounted the supplemental sleeve 20, which rotates with the sleeve 18 while being j capable of Vertical adjustment thereon. The

sleeve 2O has an enlarged lower end portion 2l, above which is a peripheral groove 22 for a purpose to be'presently explained.

Four spring-arms 23 are provided and are formed integral in pairs, and at the central `orrniddle portion of each pair of arms is an angular opening 24, which receives the angular portion of the sleeve 20. The arms 23 are disposed at right angles to each other, and they project outwardly and then downwardly and at the lower ends thereof are secured to the blocks 25 of scrubbing-brushes, these l spring-arms being adapted to hold the brushes yieldably against the surface to be scrubbed, and by reason of the arms being connected to the sleeve 20, which rotates with the sleeve 18, the brushes will be rotated about the wheels and axle as the machine advances. It will be noted that the handle 16 is connected securely to the shaft 14, so that when the shaft is turned the handle turns with it, and, conversely, by swinging the handle laterally the shaft may be turned to steer the apparatus. The yieldability of the brushcarrying arms permits of tilting of the mech anism suiiicient to raise the Wheel 13 when the apparatus is to be turned, the slidability of the sleeve 2O on the squared upper end of the sleeve 1S also facilitating this operation.

To raise the arms 23, and therewith the brushes, at times, a collar 26 is engaged in the ,peripheral groove of the sleeve 20 and hasiaterally-projecting ears 27, with which are engaged the' ends of a bail 28, having an eye 29 in its upper end, in which is engaged the IOO ably mounting the lever a shiftable fulcrum is provided, the result of which is apparent.

To supply water during the scrubbing operation, a reservoir il is provided, which is mounted removablyin a holder42 at the upper end of the socket-piece l5, and from the lower end of this reservoir projectsa spigot 42', having its discharge end positioned to direct a stream into the path of rotation of the scrubbing-brushes, so that the brushes as they rotate out or intersect the stream. The water is thus delivered where the floor isscrubbed, and in consequence the most efcient results are obtained.

It will be understood that in practice modilcations of the specific construction shown may be made, and any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

It will be noted that the lever and its raek provide means for holding the brushes down against the floor aswell as means for raising and holding the brushes in raised position.

What is claimed is- 1. Ascrubbing-maehinecomprisinganaxle provided with wheels, a shaftsupported from the axle and having a handle connected thereto, a sleeve rotatably mounted upon the shaft, operative connections between the axle and sleeve for rotating the latter, arms mounted upon the sleeve for vertical, sliding movement and having brushes connected thereto,

and means for raising and lowering of the arms.

A scrubbing-machine comprising an axle provided with wheels, a shaft supported from the axle and provided with a handle, a sleeve rotatably mounted upon the shaft, connections between the axle and sleeve for rotating the latter, scrubbing-brushes having arms slidably connected with the sleeve and fixed against rotation thereon, means connected with the arms for raising and lowering them, and a reservoir mounted upon the upper end of the shaft and having a spout disposed to deliver Water in the path of rotation of the brushes.

3. A scrubbing-machine comprising an axle provided with wheels and having a bevel-gear, sleeves mounted upon the axle, a shaft fixed to one of the sleeves and having a handle connected thereto, a sleeve rotatably mounted upon the shaft and having a bevel-gear engaged with the first-named bevel-gear, a second sleeve slidably mounted upon the rst sleeve and IiXed against rotation thereon,arms fixed to the second sleeve for rotation therewith and provided with brushes at their lower ends, abail connected to the second sleeve, a

lever mounted upon the handle and connected to the bail for raising and lowering the second sleeve and therewith the brushes, means for holding the lever at differentpoints of its adjustment and a reservoir mounted above the shaft and having a spigot disposed to direct a stream into the path of movement of the brushes. y
