PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R. BORDNER, OF CANTON, OHIO.
FENCE-POST.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,761, dated October 20, 1903.
Application filed July 6, 1903. Serial No. 164,330. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that L'WILLIAM R. BORDNER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description .of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fence-posts, more particularly that kind having a plastic base and a standard separably secured thereto.
The object of the invention is to provide a construction whereby the standard can be readily removed and replaced when worn.
A further object is to provide a simple and efficient means for fastening the standard to the base.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the clamp which fastens the standard to the base. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of the clamp.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates the base, which is embedded in the ground and is made out of some vitrified plastic material, so that the same maybe practically imperishable.
At 7 is indicated a wooden standard, to which the Wires or rails are secured. The standard is secured to the base by a clamp comprising a plate 8, having at each side projecting arms 9, which clasp the base 6, and similar arms 10, extending in an opposite didirection and clasping the standard 7. To the plate 8 a strip 11 is riveted, the upper end of which is formed into a hook 11, extending over the base, whilethe opposite end has a hook 11 in which the lower end of the standard sets. The arms 10 and the hook 11 have holes 10 and 11, respectively, through which nails may be driven into the standard to further secure the same.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 the standard has beveled sides 7, and the arms 10 are shaped accordingly.
respectively, as in the construction heretofore described. To the strip areriveted arms 13, clasping the base, and oppositely-extending arms 14, clasping the standard, are riveted to the arms 13.
i At 15 is indicated an anchor the shank 15 of which has a slot 15*, by which itis slipped over the hook 11 The wings 16 extend horizontallyin opposite directions and are formed by splitting the metal and bending up the divided parts. One of the wings extendsunder the base, While the other extends outward in the opposite direction. The wing which extends under the base prevents the clamp from slipping up off the same. By this construction the clamp is securely fastened to the base and efiectively supports the standard. The rear side of the standard has a groove to receive the strip 11, so that the standard may lie snugly against the plate 8. The upper end of the anchor also extends into the slot, so that it will not interfere with the setting of the standard in the hook 11 Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fence-post comprising a plastic base, a standard, and means for fastening the same together comprising a plate having at one end a hook extending over the base, and a hook at the opposite end extending under the standard, and arms projecting from the plate and clasping the base and standard, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a fence-post comprising a base, a standard, and a clamp for fastening the same together, of an anchor secured to the clamp having oppositely-extend ingwings, one of said wings extending under the base, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM R. BORDN ER.
