ANTIKICKING DEVICE AND SHIELD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,669, dated October 20, 1903. Application filed November 28, 1902. Serial No. 133,248. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN J AooBsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Towner, McHenry county, North Dakota, have invented a new and'original Antikicking Device and Shield, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an antikicking device for cows; and it is primarily intended to be employed during the process of milking, so that the cow will not be able to turn over the pail or milk-receptacle nor disturb the operator either by her hoofs or by switching her tail.
A further object is to provide means for easily and quickly applying and removing the device.
Other objects and advantages. of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the harness, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the shield and udder-support.
The invention consist of a shield vertically and transversely disposed with relation to the cow and a horizontally-disposed device for supporting the udder, said shield and device being suspended from a harness insuch a manner as to be easily supported by the animal. The harness is illustrated as comprising a neck-loop, the ends of which are connected by a ring 2, one end being fast and the other end being adjustably connected to the ring, so as to increase and diminish the size of the loop. A back-strap 3 is also connected'to the ring and extends back to a point adjacent to the hips of the animal, at which end ,it is connected to a saddle 4, supporting a cow-tail holder 5, so that when the harness is in proper position the tail-holder will be in a convenient position to hold the tail of the cow, and thereby prevent its being whisked around against the operator. A plurality of shield-supporting straps extend from the saddle, and those designated by the numerals 6 and 6 pass on the outside of the thighs of the animal to engage edge. rings '7 and 8 on the shield 9, while the straps designated by the numerals 10 and 11 engage a ring 12 on the concavo-convex udder-support'13, which is arranged in rear of the shield 9 and is connected to the shield at the edge of the opening 1 L therein, so that the rear portion of the udder will be seatediu the support 13 and the oppositely-disposed ends 15 and 16 will extend slightly beyond the hind legs of the cow, while the teats will be free to be grasped by the operator, so that the cow can be milked. When the harness and the shield are in properpositions, a forward movement of either foot cannot take place without one leg coming in contact with the shield, which will retard any farther advance of the foot and at the same time press the support 13 against the udder with sufficient force to cause pain to the cow, thus efficiently reducing the liability of the operator being disturbed or the pail being turned over.
I claim--- 1. A shield of the class described, having an udder-support with an open end whereby access to the teats may be had.
2. A shield of the class described, having an udder-support arranged to leave the front portion and the teats of the udder exposed.
3. A vertically-supported shield with a rearwardly-disposed udder-support.
- .4. A vertically-supported shield with opposite ends to extend beyond the animals legs, and an intermediately-disposed udder-support. Y
5. An antikicking device, having a harness provided with a neckloop, a backstrap,
a saddle, straps leading from the saddle, a
tion with a harness, a shield arranged to hang vertically from the harness and a rearwardlyextending concavo-con vex udder-supportcarried by the shield.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHRISTIAN JACOBSON.
