To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELMER QUICK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Trinidad, in the county of Las Animas and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cows- Tail Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the milking of cows, and the main object thereof is to so secure the tail of a cow that the cow may not switch its tail in an effort to rid itself of insects, such as flies, mosquitos, gnats, etc.; as is well known, strenuous efiorts are being made in all civilized countries to inaugurate and maintain thoroughly sanitary conditions in dairies, whereby the milk may be shielded from any possible contamination, and it is equally well known that cows switch their tails continually, either to brush off flies and the like, or from a nervous habit, and this tends to brush foreign matter, such as dirt, dust, and the like into the pail during milking, particularly when the tail is filled with the filth of the yard or pasture, and it was in order to prevent such milk contamination that my invention was conceived.

My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a view of one side of a cow having my invention arranged in operative position thereon; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the opposite side thereof; and Flg. 3 1s a detached, extended, view of the invention.

In the drawings forming a part of this application I have shown a present preferred form of my invention, comprising a back-strap 4:, a neck-strap 5 secured thereto at an angle at 6, a tail-strap 7 connected with the back-strap by means of a ring, or equivalent, 8, and a positioning-strap 9 likewise connected with the ring 8.

The back-strap & is adapted to be looped and secured in adjusted position by means of a buckle 10, the looped end being connected with the ring 8, and I also provide a ring 11 at the bend of the connection of the neck-strap 5 with the back-strap; the neck-strap is also looped and secured in adjustable position by means of a buckle 12,

the looped end being connected with a hook or snap 13; the tail-strap 7 is also looped and secured in adjusted position by means of a buckle 14, the free end thereof being provided with the female member 15 of a suitable fastener, the male member of which, preferably three or more for adjustment, is located intermediate the ends of the said strap, at 16; the positioning-strap 9 is also looped and adapted to be secured in adjusted position by means of a buckle 17, the looped end being connected with a hook or snap 18, and I also provide a ring 19 upon this strap.

The application of this device is very simple and consists in adjusting the neckstrap 5 to proper length, and connecting the snap-hook 13 with the ring 11, carrying the back-strap rearwardly over the haunches, passing the positioning-strap 9 from front to rear around the leg of the cow, the right hind leg as shown, and engaging the snap-hook 18 with the ring 19, after which the tail of the cow is drawn forwardly on the left side and the tail-strap 7 passed around the same and secured by means of the fasteners 15 and 16 to firmly hold the tail, and it will be seen that, when so arranged, the apparatus positively prevents the cow from switching its tail.

My straps are preferably made of webbing, but may be made of any desired ma terial, and it will be seen that but little time is required for arranging the apparatus on a cow, or for removing the same, and it will be further noted that there is no appreciable weight on the cow, nor does it bind at any point whereby the cow might be rendered uncomfortable and, perhaps, uneasy.

My device is very simple in construction, adjustment, and use, and very efficient, and, while I have shown certain details of con struction, I do not confine myself thereto, as I may make changes thereover, within the scope of the following claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the class described, comprising a back-strap, a neck-strap connected to one end thereof, means for securing said neck-strap in position, a tail-strap on the other end of said back-strap, means for holding a tail therein, a positioning-strap also secured to the rear end of said back strap, and means for holding the saine" 10 straps on a coW, means for holding the tail in said tail-strap, and means for adjusting each of said straps.
