DAVID A. SCOTT AND BURD'GE, OF CINCINNATI OHIO.
Letters Patenthhr 14,1'5s,..z aa;mm 4, 1868.
IMPROVED srsmesnn arron.
To ALL w en 1r MAY concern Be it known that we, DAVID A. Soo'r'r and ll. E. BURDGE, of Cincinnati, in the county of "Hamilton, and
State of Ohio, have inre nte'd s nclyend useful Improvement in Springs for Becl-Bottoms, of which the follosving is' a'full and clear de'leu'ption, reference being bad to the eccompenying drawings; making part of this specification.
Our improvement in springs for hed-hottoms cousistsin prolonging one arm of the spring to rest upon cross? f rails of the bed-bottom to which they'are secured, for the purpose of insuring greater stability to the slats resting 1 upon the springs, as well as to secure more permanently to the cross rails of the bed-bottom the springs'restiug" thereon.
Figure 2 isa sectional elevation of the'eume.
Figure 1 is n perspceti mpf ourimproved spring locatedjin place, upo'uithe cross-rail of the bedbottom, suit ettechedto one end of a rail. v
L is th e cross-rail of the bed-bottom towhich the sp'ringsyB end secured. The springs 13 consist of the helicoidel coils a. Arms 6, which terminate iu.the saddle-bar, c,-upon which rest the slats of the'hed-hottomi ere centinuations of the helicoidnl coils, e. The saddle-bore is turned down beneath the ends of the arms 6, and the rodO passed beneath the angle at the extremity of the arms'b, through series of lougitirdinal slats, D. The saddle-bars O 'hein g located beneath the slats, and in contact with them. A continuatiou of the helicoidsl springs or coil, a, are the-straight urms, E which rest upon the cross-rail, A to which they are secured by the clamps d. 7 The extreme ends of the straight arms E are hent down at e, and ere entered into the cross-rail A. This improved spring, as herein described, is formed of a single steel wire.
- The advantage resulting from a construction of springs for bed-bottoms as above described, wherethe arms E of the springs are continued out in the direction of the arms, b, resting upon the cross-rails A, is the greater stability and permanence in position of the springs. Usually the helical springs termiuatein straight arms,
which are inserted into the cross-piece of the bed-bottom, and are not as lasting, from their insecure connection with the cross-piece of the bed-bottom, which is obviated-By the spring of our invention, by"th e prolongation in the nuns, E, usually straight; and further, the springs are continually held in position, \vhen constructed according to the above descriptiqn, since the greater the pressure upon the springs, thecloser the-contact of the srms E with the cross-rails A upon which they rest, and to which they are secured.
What we claim as new, of our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isg y The prolongation, in the arms E, in the some direction as the armsb, of the helicoidal spring or coils a,
' when constructed end securcd to the cross-ruil A, substantially as herein described; as and for the purpose .DAVID A. sco'rr, J. BUBDGE-v Witnesses: I g G. L.'F1snus, A. M. Ares.
