Description
JOHN C. RIGKERD, or LEwIsvILLE, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 74,138, dated February 4, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN GULTIVATORS.
elle Sitchin rtfemt tu in time tetta's ndert ma -mzztugprtt at tige tame.
TO ALL WHOM ITMAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. RICKERD, of Lewisville, in the county of Henry, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare tbc following to be a full and correct description of the same, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my improvement appertains to fully understandnd use -the same, referencev being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, and in which;
Figure 1 is'a perspective view of my improved cultivator, and
Figure 2' a detached view of part of the same.
Like letters indicate like parts in the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists in a novel way of making the seat adjustable, and of attaching and securing the cultivator-plough frames.
A, in the drawings, may represent the main frame-piece of the cultivator,to thc ends otwhich are attached uprights B B', to which the wheels CA C are secured. D is the tongue, to which a cross-piece, E, is attached7 having uprights F, which are braced to the uprghts B B by means of rods b, and to the tongue by rods d, which are provided with loops at their lower ends, and held by nuts e on the screw-boltsf, which pass through the free ends ofthe uprights F, and are provided on their inner ends with basesg'having flanges t, which lutter are placed between the lips z'j of the cultivator-beams. These couplings have vertical llangcs c l, between which the cultivator-beams G are pivoted on pins ml The cultivator-ploughs and their'standards are secured to the beams G and handles H by means of rods a al a2.V To the main beam A are secured hooks u, one on each-sido of the tongue, and facing inwardly. I is the seat, secured to two hinged pieces J, and supported by curved rods K passing through loops or eyes o, (which are secured to the uprights B,) and provided with hooks K to prevent their slipping through the eyes o. `pp are foot-rests secured to the seat I, which is slightly curved, and serves, when in position, as shown in red lines, to support the driving-lines.
The operation of my improvement is easily understood. By means of the peculiar hinges, the cultivators may be easily elevated or moved laterally, to avoid stalks or rocks; and when driving to or from the work they can be hooked up out of the-way on the rods a2 if the driver desires to ride, or on the footrests p if the driver prefersA to walk, and theseat is turned up, as shown in'rcd lines.
Having thus described my invention, what Ilclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
lf The double hinge, consisting of, the screw-boltf, bases g, flanges L r Z, lips z'j, and pins m, to hinge the cultivator-beams to the main frame, all constructed and arranged substantially as described.
2. The hinged seat I, supported by means of curved rods, and provided with foot-rests p, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
The combination ofthe frame A, hooks n, rods a2, and footrests p, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. y
The above specification of my improvement in cultivators signed, this 7th day of December, 1867.
' JOHN c. RIGKERD.
