ELISHA WALKER AND J OSIAH J. PIATT, OF LA PORTE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Iatcnt No. b, dated August 31, 1869.
T0 all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that we, ELrsHA WALKER and .losrarr J. Prarr, of La Porte, in the county of La Porte and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gultivators; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description 0f the same, reference being had to the anneXed drawings, marking part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Our improvements relate to that class of cultivators in which the plows are suspended upon wheels, and the points on which we have made our improvements on former machines will appear from the claims hereinafter to be set forth.
In the drawings, A A are the wheels, attached to the beam B (which is the aXle) through the metallic hangers C G. The tongue D is 'fastened to the beam B by the metallic hinges E E, which tongue D forms the frame, bring one piece and whole at the end and split in the manner indicated at the base. Across the top and in front of the beam B it is secured by plate F on the top, and on the under side, at a proper distance from the beam B, it is secured by the plate G. rIhe brace H eX- tends from the under side of the plate F to the under side of the evener I, to which are attached the whifetrees.
J J are knuckle-joints, which are attached to the plow-beams K K, and secured to the posts L L and by bolts to the braces a c, and which posts L L and braces a a are attached to the tongue D by bolts in such a manner that the forward end of the plow-beams K K may be raised or lowered to any height desired.
b b are bars attached to the beam B, outside the base of the tongue D, to which are attached the plow-beams K K by the chains c c by hooks, upon which hooks the beams are suspended and the shovels swung clear of the ground when the cultivat-or is being moved while not in use, and are held up by the catches d d.
M is a self-acting double eccentric, which is made fast to the tongue D on the right-hand side, and attached by ring to the right-hand bar b in such a manner that by the means of it the plow may be raised and lowered at the pleasure of the driver, and is so arranged that,
when the cultivator is in motion, by throwing the eccentric over the center it is carried forward and the plows raised and held up.
e c e e are the shovels, which are secured to the standards f f f f by bolts.
g g g y are the braces, which pass through the standards f, and held by a wooden pin, which, in case of the shovels striking against an obstacle, breaks, and the standards are sw ung back without injury. The outside standards are attached to the double adjusters N N, which are attached to the plow-beams, and which are constructed in such a manner that by loosening the bolt attaching the adjuster to the plowbean1 the shovels may be regulated to any depth desired, and by loosening the bolt attaching the standard to the double adjuster the shovels may be turned in, as desired, by bringing the top of the standard back, the bolt passing through the slot in the adjuster and held in any position desired by tightening the nuts upon the bolts. The inside standards are attached to the single adjusters O O by bolts, which are curved in such a manner that by loosening the nuts of the bolts the standards may be passed backward or forward, the bolts passing along the slot in the adjuster, and the shovels thrown in or out, as desired. B is the drivers seat, supported upon two bars, h 7L, which, resting upon the beams B, are spread out in the form of a letter V, and extend forward and attached to the top of bar t', which passes and rests against the base of the tongue D. As the seat may be pushed for ward or back, the weight of the driver may always be made to counterbalance that of the tongue.
j j are the stirrups, which are attached around the inside plow-beams, and which slip backward and forward to suit the accommodation of the drivers feet, and which enable him to regulate the movements of the plows in passing through the rows of corn.
beams, by the aid of which they are swung both horizontally and vertically within the knuckle joints J J, upon which they freely swing, and the plows run in any position desired.
Vhat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. rIhe mode of elevating and lowering the The handles Q Q are attached to theplowplows by the selfeacting double eccentric M, substantially as set forth.
2. The mode of turning the'shovelseL in or out by the double adjusters N N and single adjusters O O, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the tongue D, posts L L, braces a c, knucklejoints J J, hinges E E, bars b b, self-acting double eccentric M, Vtnesses: double adjusters N N, and single adjusters O O, ROBT. A. HEWS, respectively constructed and arranged sub- MORTInER NYE.. stantially as set forth.
In testimonyT whereof we have signed our two subscribing Witnesses.
