y JOHN H. JONES, OF FOSTORIA, OHIO.
CONCRETE OR CEMENT BVUlLDlNG-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,040, dated October 13, 1903.
- Application led April l, 1903. Serial No. 150,526. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t 11i/ty concern: g
Be it known that I, JOHN H. JONES, a citizen of the United States of America; and a resi'- deut of Fostoria, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and.
useful Improvements in Concrete or Cement Building-Blocks, Vof which the following isa specification. Y f
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cementor concrete building-blocks of that character comprising an outer Wall or shell and an inclosed space or chamber filled with some suitable material, such as cinders or cinders and sawdust or some analogous material; and it has for its objects, among others, toprovide an improved building-block of this nature, with end depressions for hand holes to facilitate the handling of the block, and also when the ends of two blocks are joined together the adjacent depressions form an inclosed hollow space permitting of the expansion and contract-ion by reason of changes of temperature, thus preventing cracking of the blocks. The preferred filling is such as to possessl sufficient elasticity and absorptive qualities to prevent the core from dividingin case it becomes necessary to divide the block. For this purpose I employ a composition lilling of cinders, sawdust, and granulated cork, with a sufcient amount of cement to hold the core together. The block is provided with an imitation rock-face, which may be givenany desired color by coloring the material before itis molded.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the drawings, which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part ot' this specication, and in Which-e Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a portion of a Wall constructed of buildingblocks in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of one of the blocks. Fig. 3 is a substantially central transverse section through the same. Fig. 4; is a substantially central longitudinal section through the same.
Like numerals of reference indicate like 4,parts throughout the several views.
4of the walls of which will be varied according `to the use to which the .block is to be put,
the size of the same, and the strains to which it is to be subjected. The. filling 4 maybe of any suitable cheap material, such as cinders, granulated cork, or the like; but I preferably employ a composition of cinders, sawdust, and granulated cork, (or their equivalents,) together with a sufficient amount of cement to hold the core together, and' I provide sufficient elasticity and absorptive qualities to yield slightly to the contractile action of the inclosing Walls When the latter are subjected to the action of severe cold and yet aid in resisting the pressure and shocks to which the block is liable to be subjected. By this construction of filling the core is held togetherY and practically tothe Walls of the outer body or shell, so that in case it becomes necessary to divide the block the core is held against dividing and from separation from the Walls of the shell.
The depressions 5 in the ends of the block serve a double function. They provide convenient means for handling the block, whereby one person can move the same as may be required, and when the blocks are arranged' end to end these depressions come opposite each other and form an inclosed hollow space, providing for the contraction and expansion without cracking of the block.
As will be evident from Fig. 1, the yend blocks of the structure are provided upon both a side and end with the rock-facing 3 for purposes which it is not necessary to explain.
The block is formed by molding, the process of which it is not thought necessary to herein describe.
W'hat I claim as new is- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a building-blockformed with a shell of con'- crete with an interior .chamber or space, a fill- ICO hand-holes in the ends of the outer wall only, said blocks being arranged with the adjacent hand-holes opposed to each other whereby 15 they form inclosed dead-air spaces, as and for the purpose specified.
Signed by me at Fostoria, Ohio, this 28th day of March, 1903.
Jol-IN H. JONES.
