SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,900, dated October 6, 1903.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. OBERWAL- DER, a citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of the city of New York, borough-of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Nozzle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I
This invention relates to an improvement upon the nozzle disclosed in my prior patent, No. 719,849, dated February 3, 1903.
The object of the present invention is principally to provide means for completely shutting oif the flow of water through the nozzle, and this I efiect by providing an interior bead located inward of the mouth of the nozzle and arranged to be engaged by the conical divider-block when said block is drawn inward, thus closing the nozzle and attaining vided at its mouth or discharge end with a flaringsurface aflas in myprior patent. Within the nozzle, just below the mouth thereof, is an annular'bead a dindicates the divider-block, having, as before, the conical part d and the cylindrical part d flared portion a of the mouth of the nozzle the same as in my prior patent, and by moving the divider-block inward until the base of its conical portion d engages the head a the nozzle will be completely closed and the passage of water therethrough prevented. When the divider-block is moved outwardly from this bead a the operation of the nozzle in forming the varying streams of water is in no way afiected by the bead a It will thus be seen that by means of the present invention I am enabled to obtain the same spray- This divider-block coacts with the structed, and at the same time by simply moving the divider-block to its extreme inward position the nozzle will be entirely closed.
The divider-block is carried by the sleeve b, which is threaded on the nozzle a and has a cup I? formed on its outer end, this cup flaring outward, as indicated, and carrying a number (preferably four) flattened arms or knife-edges 0, these being disposed edgewise to the nozzle and being fastened to the divider-block to hold the same in position. Owing to the peculiar form of the arms c, they do not obstruct the stream of water pass ing from the nozzle. This construction provides a neat and attractive. nozzle, and at the same time it protects the relatively slender knife-like arms 0 from destructive blows.

Various changes in'the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the intent of my claims.
- Having thus described my invention, I -'claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A spraying-nozzle, comprising a nozzle proper, a divider-block, and means foradjustably connecting the two, said divider-block and nozzle proper having surfaces coacting to vary the stream of water passing from the nozzle and the nozzle also having an interior of the nozzle proper which coacts with the divider-block, said head being engaged by the divider-block at the limit of its inward movement completely toclose the nozzle.
