BARREL-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 740,679, dated October 6, 190.3.
` Application filed April 24, 1903. Serial No. 154,176. (No model.)
with barrels or kegs designed for us'ein hold` ing sauer-krant, pickles, dto.
One of the principal objects ofrthe invention is to provide a novel construction of head which can be applied to and removed from a barrel without loosening the top hoops and rendering the barrel incapable of holding liquid.
A further object ofrthe invention is to provide means for securely holdingthe head in proper position with relation to the remaining portion of the barrel. l
Further objects andadvantages of this in vention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof Will be particularly pointed out in theappended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the drawings,` Figure lis a vertical longitudinal view through a portion of a barrel, showing the head applied; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken at a right angle to Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the sectional head de-` tached.
In the preferred embodiment of oui-invention as illustrated in the drawings, l desig- Dates a barrel of ordinary construction provided with the usual crozed staves held together by the hoops 2. The bottom head of the barrel can be secured in the crozed chime in the usual manner; but the top head is removable to permit access to be readily had to the interior of the barrel. K
The removable head comprises independent side members 3 and 4 and a sectional intermediate member 5, which intermediate member constitutes a key to force the bev eled edges of the side members firmly into the croze and binds against the opposite edges of the members, so as to prevent any' leakage of the contents of the barrel.
VOne of the side members carries a transverse bar 6, the free end of which rests beneath the other member and forms a support for the disengaged side of the member, so as to prevent the said supported member from dropping into the barrel.
The intermediate or locking member comprises two sections 7 and 8, one of which is hinged to the other. A plate 9 is carried by one of the sections and overlaps the hinged end of the other section onthe side opposite to that on which is located the hinge l0, so that when the threadedfastening device ll, carriedby the plate 9, engages the threaded opening 12 in the bar 6 both intermediate sections will be held in rigid contact with the crozed end of the barrel.
The opposing edges of the side 'members of the head are chamfered or beveled, so as to 'diverge in an upward direction, while the barrel, an interposed locking member also in the croze and comprising two sections hinged together, a rigid clamping-plate carried by tion, a screw projecting through the plate and its supporting-section and a bar carried by oneof its rst-named members by the screw` and terminally engaging the remaining firstnamed section.
2. The combination with a barrel, of two outside head members, andan intermediate member, having an intermediate break-joint, a plate rigid on the intermediate section and overlapping the break-joint, a bar on one of the iirst-named members, and having a free one section and overlapping the other sec- IOO terminal to engage the remaining first-named member and a tension device engaging the plate and bar to lock the members together.
3. The combination with a barrel, of two members resting in the croze in one end of the barrel, an interposed locking device also in the Croze of the barrel and provided with spreading edges, said interposed member com-l prising two sections hinged together one of said members carrying a rigid plate with a projecting edge overlapping the hinge-joint and the edge of the other section, a screw carried by the plate, and a transverse bar engaged by the screw and free to terminally bear against one of the first-mentioned members to lock the parts together.
4. A barrel-head, comprising two outer sections and an intermediate section, a bar rigid HEZEKIAH K. MOURNING. GEORGE K. TAYLOR.
