To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that we, ALEXANDER GART- SHORE and WILLIAM MAXWELL, citizens of the United States of America, residin g at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of eration of extracting the nail.
Furthermore, the object of the invention is to produce a nail-extracting implementand in combination therewith a readily-detachable base or support in order that the base or support need not obstruct the use of the implement when the function of the base or support may be dispensed with.
Furthermore, the object of the invent-ion is to produce a base for an implement-of the character noted which is in such relation to the implement that the said base may be moved by the foot of the operator in order that it may be properly positioned with relation to the nail or spike to be extracted to attain the best results.
Finally, the object of the invention is to produce adeviceof the character noted which will possess advantagesin points of efficiency,
simplicity, and durability, proving at the same time comparatively inexpensive.
With the'foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and com- In the drawings, A denotes an ordinary claw-bar, B a base-plate, and 0 posts formed integral with the base-plate. served that the base-plate is Hat on its lower surface and that it extends a considerable distance to the front of the posts, thus affordinga bearing for the foot of an operator for retaining it in a fixed position or for exerting force to slide it toward the. object extracted to increase the vertical force of the'claws.
As illustrated, the sides of the claw-head arecut away somewhat to form shoulders I, and the upper. portions of the shoulders are rounded, as at 2, to form bearings for the upper rounded surfaces of the posts. arrangement the supporting-posts may be readily applied and removed and a pivotal pin is dispensed with. Hence an aperture in the claw-head need not be formed.
As shown in Fig. 2, the sides of the claws of the hammer are cut away to form shoulders 3 and a socket or seat 4 for the upper ends of the posts, and the operation and advantages of this construction correspond to the construction and operation described in connection with the disclosure of the invention illustrated in Fig. 1.
The construction, operation, and advantages will, it is thought, he understood from the foregoing description, it being noted that various changes may be resorted to in the proportions and other details of construction for successfully carrying the invention into practicewithout departing from its scope.
Having fully described the invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is H In a device of the character described, a head or body having claws,- said parts having their sides cut away to form shoulders, in such relation as to form bearings for supporting It will be ob- In this the head or body when the claws are in oper- In testimony whereof we affi'x. our signatures, in the presence of two witnesses, this 22d day of December, 1902.
