Be it known that I, vIosnrrr N. NnwsoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rivet-Setting Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My inventionrelates to new and useful improvements in rivet setting devices, the principal object of my invention being to provide a comparatively simple apparatus which includes a punch or awl and anv anvil and which apparatus can be advantageously employed for setting or inserting rivets through two or more layers of material.
My improved device is particularly intended for use in setting rivets which are utilized for attaching two or more parts of the casing utilized in connection with pneumatic tires, it being understood that it is the present practice to utilize two old casings in the formation of what is known to the trade as a remade casing.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the awl or punch forming a part of my improved device.

The awl or punch forming a part of my invention comprises a handle 10, preferably formed of metal and projecting from one end thereof is a shank 11, in the lower end of which is formed an aperture 12. Removably positioned in this aperture is a short shank 13 which is formed integral with a pointed head 14.
The anvil portion of the device comprises a base plate 15 which is adapted to be fixed to a suitable support such as a table 1G and projecting upwardly vand outwardly from one side of said base plate is a bracket 17. Formed integral with the upper end of this bracket is a curved plate 18 which performs the functions of an anvil and a support for the work while the rivet is being positioned therein, and formed through said plate near one edge thereof is an aperture 19.
In the use of my improved device, the work through which the rivet is to be set is positioned on the anvil 18 with the point where the rivet is to be positioned directly over aperture 19. The pointed head 14 of the awl or punch is now inserted through the work and through the aperture 19 as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4, after which the operator removes the pointed head 14 and its shank 13 from the lower end of said punch and which lower end projects beneath the anvil.
The shank of a rivet a is now inserted in the aperture 12 and the punch is drawn upward and disengaged from the work, thereby leaving the shank of said rivet in the aperture formed by said punch with the head of said rivet bearing against the underside of the work. Said work is now shifted sidewise a slight distance upon the anvil or until the head bears on the fiat surface thereof, after which a washer is applied to the projecting end of the rivet shank and said projecting end is now hammered down in the usual manner to secure said rivet in position and firmly unite the material through which it is inserted.
A device of my improved construction is comparatively simple, can be easily and cheaply manufactured, and provides means for easily and quickly inserting rivets through one or more layers of material such as leather, rubber, fabric, or the like.
It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claim.
