To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, WALTER D. CASE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Granby, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Device for Operating the Ventilating- Doors of Tobacco-Barns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a simple and easily-manipulated means Whereby to simultaneously open and close a vertical tier of 'ventilatingdoors, particularly such ventilating-doors as are used in the construction of tobacco-barns, and to provide means for holding the doors in a fully-open or partially-open position. v
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth,- and pointed out in the claims. v
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
. in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the side of a tobacco-barn and a vertical tier of ventilating-doors and a side elevation of a regulating device, the device and doors being shown in two positions. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the guide-brackets. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of. the lower end of the regulating device and a lock for holding the device in a raised position and the doors in the open position, and'Fig. 4: is
a perspective view of the inner end of the upper member of a modified form of guide: bracket.
A represents an upright of a tobacco-barn, B a portion of the roof, and 0 sections of siding which are secured to the upright A, ventilating-spaces intervening the sections of fixed siding C. These ventilating-spaces are closed through the medium of doors D, which doors are hinged to the lower portion of a fixed siding and close snugly against the upper portion of the next lower section of fixed siding, as is shown in Fig. 1.
. E represents guide-brackets, one of which is shown in detail in Fig. 2, and each of the said brackets consists, preferably, of an upper horizontal member 10, 'a lower member 11 at an angle to the upper member 10, and an eye 12 at the junction of the two members 10 and 11, the said eye being horizontally located at the extreme outer end of the bracket. At the inner end'of the lower member 11 an apertured heel-plate 13 is formed, and at the inner end of the upper member 10 a collar 14 is produced, and an apertured section 15 extends horizontally from the said collar 14. Aguidebracket E is attached to each fixed sidingsection C, preferably in such manner that its upper member 10 will be adjacent to the upper edge of said siding-section, and the collar 14: will bear against the outer face of the siding, while the extension 15 is carried inward through an opening in the siding to an engagement with the upright A, to which it is or otherwise attached to the outer surface of the siding-section, as is shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 4' I have illustrated a modified form of bracket. wherein the upper member 10 hasan inner vertical terminal 16, which extends downward from the said member 10, and said terminal is provided with apertures whereby to secure the upper member of a guidebracket as well as the lower member to the outside of the siding.
A regulating-rod F is loosely passed through the eyes 12 of all of the guide-brackets E, and a link 18 is pivotally attached to the lower edge of each door D at its outer surface, as is shown in Fig. 1, and each link is above the guide-bracket E. Each link at its outer end is pivotally attached to a collar 19, and said collars 19 are secured on the regulating-rod F by means of set-screws or equivalent devices. The regulating-rod F is preferably made to terminate in ahandle 17 at its lower end, so that the said rod may be readily manipulated.
It will be observed thatunder the construction above described if the regulating-rod F is raised the doors D will be opened and if the rod F is lowered the said doors will be closed, the extent to which the doors will open and close being regulated by the extent to which the rod is raised and lowered. I
When the rod is raised to open the doors D the desired distance for ventilating purposes,
the rod and doors are held in their upper position by suitable locking devices. (Shown particularly in Fig. 3.) One form of locking device consists in providing a set-screw in the eye 12 of the lowermost guide-bracket E, which is made to bear against the rod when the rod has been elevated as far as desired, and when the rod is to be lowered the screw is loosened. Another form of locking device is also shown, which consists in providing a stud 21 at the eye of the lowermost guidebracket E, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and in securing a sleeve 22 by setscrew or otherwise to the rod F just below the lowermost collar 19 on the rod and pivoting a latch-bar 23 on the sleeve 22, which latch-bar is provided at its lower end in one longitudinal edge with a series of rack-teeth 24, adapted when the rodor bar F has been raised as far as desired to be brought in engagement with the stud 21 to rest thereon, and thus hold the rod in its upperposition, as is shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device for operating a vertical tier of ventilating-doors for barns and like structures, guide-brackets adapted for attachment to the structure, a rod mounted to slide vertically in the guide brackets, links pivotally connected with the ventilating-doors and with the said rod, a fastening-latch pivotally connected with the rod, and means carried by one of the guide-brackets and adapted to be engaged bythe latch to hold the rod in an upper position, and the doors in an open or partially-open position, as set forth.
2. In a device for operating the ventilatingdoors of barns or like structures, guide-brackets adapted for attachment to the structure and each comprising an upper horizontal member, and a lower member at an angle to the horizontal member, the bracket being provided with an eyeat the junction of the members, the lower member having a heel-plate for attachment to the outerface of the siding, and the upper member having a collar for engaging the outer face of the siding, and a section extending through an opening in the siding and adapted to be attached to'an upright to which the siding is secured, links adapted for pivotal engagement with the doors of the said structure, a regulating-rod passed loosely through the eyes of the said guide-brackets, and a pivoted connection be tween the links and the said regulating-rod, as set forth.
3. In a device for operating a vertical tier of ventilatingdoors for tobacco-barns, the combination with the uprights of the structure, the siding secured to the said uprights and doors hinged to the siding and normally closing openings in the siding, of brackets attached to the siding below each door, each bracket consisting of an upper horizontal member, a lower member at an angle to the horizontal member, and a horizontal eye at the outer end of both members, the lower member being provided with a heel-plate for engagement with the siding and the upper member being provided with a collar for engagement with the siding, and a section passed through the siding for attachment to the upright, a regulating-rod. having free movement in the eyes of all of the guide-brackets, collars secured to the said regulating-rod above each bracket, links pivotally connected with the said doors and with the said collars, a latch carried by the rod, and a keeper for the latch carried by one of the said guide-brackets, as and for the purpose specified.
4. In adevice for operating the ventilatingdoors of barns or like structures,guide-brackets adapted for attachment to the structure, a regulating-rod mounted to slide in the guidebrackets, links pivotally connected with the doors of said structure and with the said rod, a projection on one of said guide-brackets, and a latch-bar pivotally connected with the rod and provided with a series of teeth for engaging said projection, as set forth.
