TUBE-ROLLING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.'739,424,dated September 22, 1903. Application filed September 18, 1902. Serial No. 123,942. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH PATRICK KANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New ark,in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tube Rolling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
In treating boiler-tubes it is the practice at present when it is desired to clean the tubes to cut them away from the flue sheet and after they have been cleaned to Weld a piece of tube to the old tube in order to make it the length necessary to fit in the boiler again.
After the piece of tube has been welded on it is customary to reduce the place where it is welded by placing it when cold between two blocks having semicylindrical grooves and with a hammer strike one of the blocks.
' This process is liable to either break the weld appear hereinafter and by reference to the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aside View in elevation of my invention; Fig. 2 an end View, and Fig. 3,'a detail view, ofmy improvement.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout-the several views, A represents any suitably-constru cted framework for my machine, having a table'B at its front end.
0 represents a shaft suitably journaled in the frame A and driven by any motor, (not shown,) D being a roller secured to said shaft.
Erepresents a platform mounted by means of a standard F over the table B, and G a lever fulcrumed on the floor andpivot'ed to the end of standard F to operate the platform,
'H being a coil-spring'to depress the table when pressure on the lever G is relieved.
I represents a box secured in any suitable manner on the platform E, consisting of a base-plate J and uprights K. L represents rolls journaled in the uprights K, their axes being parallel with the axes of roller 1) and so arranged that all of the rolls will bear against the tube, it being understood that different size boxes and differently arranged rolls are necessary to be provided for treating the-various sizes of tubes. The uprights permit the rollers bearing against the tube,
It will be clear from the" above statement of the purpose of my invention and the description thereof that after the piece of tubing has been weldedon the end of the tube N it is laid on the rolls L and the platform E raised by means of the lever G until the tube presses against the rotating roller D.- Sufficient pressure is exerted through the and effectively accomplished, and the'tube is ready for reinsertion into the boiler.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is tion with a powerdriven roller, a platform arranged for vertical adjustment, a box secured to said platform, the ends of said box being cut away in segments, and rolls journaled in said ends, the journals of said rolls lying in a curve parallel with said segmental cut-away portion, substantially as shown and described.
combination, a framework, a' power driven roller journaled therein, table, a platform secured to a standard passingthrough said table,
said platform, a coil-spring on said standard placeably secured to said platform, and rollers journaled in said box having their centers on. a segmental line, Y all of said rollers being adapted to press on the outer surface of a tube to roll it and reduce its diameter, substantially as shown and described. p
In testimony whereof I hereto affix my sig nature in the presence of'two witnesses.
JOSEPH PATRICK KANE.
