Specication of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 17, 1908. Serial No. 411,325.
To all who/m it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAJOR M. PARKER, residing at Green Island, Troy7 in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Means for Rolling .Sheet-Metal Cylinders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention, which has for its purpose to provide means for rolling sheet metal cylinders usually made of two sheets brazed together, comprehends an improved construction of machine for accurately rolling, hardening and finishing the said cylinders, of a simple and compact nature and in which the several parts are especially designed to be readily adjusted and adapted for such manipulation so that the desired operations can be economically, expeditiously and effectively accomplished.
lVith the above and other objects in view and hereinafter fully stated, my present invention, in its general nature, comprehends a stationary tubular casing for receiving the cylinder to be rolled and finished and that serves as the external bearing for the said cylinder, a roller carrying franie revolubly and longitudinally movable within the cylinder holding casing and carrying means for radially adjusting rollers that contact with the inner surface of the cylinder to be operated on.
My invention also comprehends a casing adapted for receiving inner tubular bearing members for the cylinders to be rolled, of different diameters, a spider framev revolubly held within the tubular member having rollers for engaging the inner face of the cylinder to be rolled and finished, and means that sustains the spider frame and automatically feeds it forwardly as it is being revolved.
In its more subordinate features, my invention embodies an improved means for adjusting rollers in unison radially with respect to the cylinder to be operated on, divided outer and inner tubular casing members having hinged connection, means, so that the said sections may be opened for the ready removal of the finished cylinder, means that cooperate with the mechanism that feeds the spider frame slowly forwardly, for feeding the spider frame rapidly backwardly certain other details of construction and peculiar combination of parts being also included in my present type of machine all of which will be hereinafter fully explained specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l, is a side elevation of the spider carrying and fielding mechanism, the stationary casings, portions of the latter being in longitudinal section, the cylinder to be finisher being' also shown positioned within the inner o-r tubular bearing casing. Fig. 2, is a cross section through the line Q-2 on Fig. l, and looking in the direction of the arrow a, the mechanism for lifting the upper sections of the two part casings being shown in side elevation. Fig. 3, is a cross section and end elevation taken on the line 3-3 on Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow Fig. 4, is a plan view of the spider shaft carryingl frame, and the feed mechanism for conveying it slowly forwardly and rapidly baclnvardly, parts being in section. Fig. 5, is a longitudinal section of the spider frame andthe stationary casings or tubing taken on the line 5 5 on Fig. 4. In the practical or structural. application of my invention, I employ a main tubular easing mounted on leg standards 18o and axially divided on the horizontal plane to form a lower section 1SZt to which the leg standards are attached and an upper section 1S that is hinged to the other section 18a at 18h and whichihas a flange 1S that opposes a like flange 18X on the lower section, and to which it is securely held by a pivoted cam device 24. which locks the two outer casing sections together, the latter, as alsov the divided inner casing sections 19 l9a, presently again referred to, having tongue and groove joints 18g and 19g to bring the hinged members of the outer and inner tubular casings into proper alinement for being locked together.

An inner casinor ortubular member is removably mounted within the outer casing and it also is of two parts or sections 19-1911 and each part 19-19"l has radial legs or braces QO-QO that are castwith the said section 19a whose outer ends are turned to snugly fit against the outer casing as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
Casing` 18-18a is a fixture and casing 19 19a is removable since different sizes of inner casings may be interchangeably mounted in the outer casing.
Disposed in longitudinal alinement with the casings 18H19 and in close proximity to one end is a suitably arranged framing consisting of a cross frame A, and a pair of like shaped cross frames B B having centrally disposed vertical standards o the purpose. of which will presently appear.
2G designates a longitudinally disposed drive shaft mounted in journal boxes 27 and 28 in the cross frames A and B upon which is mounted a cone pulley 25, driven by a belt 25 and which has a drive pinion 29 that meshes with a large drive gear 3 on a shaft 4 that is longitudinally slidable in its frame bearings a and o2 and which is longitudinally grooved as at 40 to receive the feather or spline 3()a of a drive pinion 30 that meshes with and drives the large gears 31431 that are mounted on and drive their respective screw shafts 32-32 that have for their purpose the feeding of the shaft slowly forwardly as will presently more fully appear.
Fixedly attached to the rear end of the shaft 4 a carriage 33 that consists of a cross head, whose opposite ends comprise hinged sections 33a 33b having internally threaded faces that form the screw bores for closing on the screw shafts 32 in such manner that forward motion a plied on the said shafts 32-32 serves to eed the car riage 33 and the shaft 4 slowly forwardly. At this point it should be stated, that the cross head 33 is rotatably mounted on the end of the shaft 4, so it can be turned at right angles, that is to the vertical position as shown in Fig. 6 to engage with vertically alined upper and lower screw shafts 34-34 the lower one of which is mounted in the bearings 27h-27b of the frames B B and the upper one in the upper ends of the brackets b-b.
To provide for a quick return of the shaft 4 the screw shafts 34 34 each carry a pinion 35 35 that engage a large drive gear 3G keyed to a shaft 37. Gear 3G has a sleeve or box 38 that revolves on a bearing 5.
39 is a drive pulley loose on shaft 37 that has a clutch face 39EL for being engaged by the clutch member 39b slidably mounted on the shaft 37 as clearly shown in Fig. 7.
By simply shifting the clutch gear into an operative position, fast motion is imparted through gear 3G to gears 35-35 and a rapid backward feed of the carriage 33, shaft 4 and the spider frame (presently referred to) is effected.
In the practical positioning of the cylinder to be finished within the inner tubular casing 19, it has its front end, that is the end that the spider frame hereinafter referred to enters, secured to the inner tubular casing 19 by four clamps C-CCC- of any approved construction that can be readily removed after the operation of rolling has been begun, as the pressure of the finishing rollsl will then hold the cylinder against its external bearing member 18 or 19.
For conveniently removing the cylinder after it has been rolled, a lifting means is connected with the upper halves of the inner and outer tubes 18 and 19, the construction of which is clearly shown in Fig. 2 by reference to which it will be seen that the diametrically and horizontally disposed foot or bracket members and divided on the horizontal axis or dividing line of the two tubes 18 and 19 and the outer tube 18 near the clamping end has an ear 18b to which connects one end of a lifting chain D the other end of which winds about a shaft 0 journaled in over head hangers o2 (only one of which is shown) and which carries a gear o3 that meshes with a. pinion 04 pendently supported from the overhead support and which carries a belt pulley c around which takes an endless belt c7 that passes over another pulley os on another shaft hung from the overhead support and which also has a drive pulley es Ato which motion is imparted in any well known manner.
The cylinder rolling or finishing means comprises essentially a spider frame that is mounted on the outer end of the shaft 4-- it having a hub 60 that engages the rsaid shaft and is keyed or otherwise secured thereto to revolve therewith, and to move longitudinally backwardly and forwardly with the said shaft as it is automatically fed, it being understood that the said shaft receives motion from the gear 3 that has a feather or key for engaging the key way or groove that extends the full length of the shaft 4.
The spider frame has a series of radial members 6 on each of which is an arm 7 slidably mounted for adjustment radially with respect to the shaft 4, and each of which has an outwardly projected ear formed with an internally threaded aperture 71 for receiving an adjusting screw 8 mounted at the inner end in inwardly projected ears 61 on the arms 6, and carrying a beveled pinion 62 at the said end all of the pinions 62 of the different arms 7-meshing with a master pinion 10 on a collar 10a loosely mounted on the outer end of the shaft 4 and having a crank handle 11 so that by turning the collar 10a motion is imparted to all the screws bifurcated at T2 and in each of the said bifurcations is mounted a roller the several rollers being designated 13, 14, 15, 16, and 1T and of which two, 16 and 1T are preferably wooden rollers for evening the metal before the other rollers, (which are steel) come into contact with the metal.
The radial arms (i are so designed that no two of them are diametrically disposed so that only one of the rollers at the time contacts with the seams or joints of two sections of which the cylinder is formed, and furthermore the several rollers are so mounted relatively to each other that one roller has the lead on the next one following` as diagrammatically shown in figure.
By arranging the rolls and spider frame as stated and providing a continuous smooth outer bearing for the said cylinder, the surplus stock on seams of metal will be on the inside of the cylinder and thus leave the outside of the cylinder perfectly smooth throughout.
From the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the complete struct-ure, the manner of operation and the advantages of my invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the artto which it appertains.
By reason of making the outer casings divided and of hinged sect-ions, the cylinder to be finished can be readily placed in position and removed, it being understood that as soon as the rollers in the spider frame engage the cylinder, it will be firmly held withiu the casings that form the outer bearing therefor, since the spider frame feed mechanism can be quickly adjusted to move the said frame into and out of the cylinder, and the rollers can be accurately and quickly adjusted for properly contacting with the internal face of the cylinder.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A cylinder rolling machine that cornprises the following elements in combination, atubular casing for the cylinder formed of longitudinal sections, an expander including a roller for contacting with the inner surface of the cylinder and means for feeding the expander forwardly and simultaneously rotating it.
2. In a cylinder rolling machine, a holder for the cyinder, an expander that includes radially adjustable rollers for engaging the cylinder, mechanism for feeding the expander forwardly and backwardly, said mechanism comprising feed screws, a drive shaft and gear connections between the drive shaft and the feed screws', connections between the feed screws and the expander,
which connections when under one adjustment engaging certain of said feed screws and when under anotherl adjustment engaging other feed screws to effect the forward and backward movement of the expander.
3. As au improvement in cylinder rolling means, in combination; an outer tubular casing formed of longitudinal sections, means for holding the sections closed, the said tubular sections forming an outer bearing for the cylinder to be rolled, a spider frame movable longitudinally within the casing, rollers mounted thereon and projected radially therefrom.
4. In a cylinder rolling machine of the character described, the combination with an outer tubular casing, an inner tubular casing removably supported in the outer tubular casing, the said inner tubular casing forming the outer bearing for the cylinder to be rolled, a frame mounted exteriorly of the casing and in the axial plane thereof, said frame having radial extensions, rollers projected laterally from the radial extensions for engaging with the inner surface of the cylinder, and mechanism that cooperates with the roller carrying frame and the supports therefor for simultaneously revolving the roller carrying frame and feeding it forwardly.
In a cylinder rolling machine of the character described, the combination with a tubular casing removably supported on a rigid frame, the said casing forming an outer bearing for the cylinder to be rolled, of a frame mounted exterior-ly of the casing and in the horizontal axial plane thereof, said frame having radial extensions, rollers projected laterally from said extensions for engaging with the inner surface of the casing,
and mechanism that coperates with the roller carrying frame and the supports therefor for simultaneously revolving the roller carrying frame and feeding it slowly forward, and a separate shift-able drive mechanism coperating with the carriage for feeding it rapidly backward in the axial plane of the casing.
6. The combination with an outer tubular casing and an inner tubular casing removably mounted therein, the two casings being formed of longitudinal half sections together, means for locking the half sections of the tubular casings together, the inner 011e of the two casings forming the outer bearing for the cylinder to be rolled, a spider frame revolubly mounted within the cylinder, rollers projected therefrom and radially adjustable with respect to the cylinder, means on the spider frame for adjusting all of the rollers simultaneously and means for revolving the said spider frame as it is being fed forwardly, as set forth.

The combination with a stationarily held casing that forms an outer bearing for the cylinder to be rolled; of a support disposed in the axial plane of the casing, a spider frame mounted on the said support, means on the support that cooperates with the spider frame for moving the said frame forwardly and backwardly within the cylinder, rollers mounted 0n the said spider frame, said rollers having a staggered arrangement and means mounted on the spider frame for adjusting the rollers radially with respect to the spider' frame, substantially as shown and described.

In a machine of the character described, the combination with a stationarily held tubular casing that forms the outer bearing for the cylinder to be rolled; of a suitable support mounted in the horizontal axial plane of the cylinder, a spider frame mounted on the said support, means on the support that cooperates with the spider frame for revolving the said frame and simultaneously feeding it forwardly, said means including a screw feed carriage, a series of arms mounted on the spider frame, means on the spider frame that cooperates with the said arms, for simultaneously projecting all of the arms radially, and a roller mounted in the end of each arm and a shiftable drive mechanism adapted to be thrown into act-ion with the screw feed carriage for moving the carriage bacluvardly.
S). lIn a machine of the character described, the combination with a casing that forms the outer bearing for the cylinder; of a suitable framing, a shaft revolubly mounted on the fran'iing and slidable in the longitudinal direction in its bearings, means on the fram- .ing for rotating said shaft, a spider frame mounted on the front end of the shaft, a series of radially adjustable. arms on the spider frame, a roller mounted in the end of each of the said arms, a pair of horizontally disposed feed screws, gear connections between the feed screws and the shafts, a cross head revolubly mounted on the inner end of the shaft, said cross head including screw boxes at the op )osite ends for engaging with the horizontal f disposed in the vertical plane with which the screw clamp members of the cross head on the end of the shaft are adapted to engage, and a driver means for imparting m0- tion to the vertically disposed screw shaft, all being arranged substantially as shown and for the purposes described. i
10. In a cylinder rolling machine, a cylinder holder, an internal rotatable expander eed screw, a set of feed screws therefor, a feed mechanism for imparting longitudinal movement to the expander in one direction, and means for moving the eX- pander in an opposite direction.
11. A cylinder rolling machine, comprising a casing for holding the cylinder, an expander adapted to act internally on the cylinder, means for rotating the expander and simultaneously feeding it longitudinally, said means including a carriage for the eX- pander, means for feeding the carriage longitudinally in res )ect to the casing and a drive mechanism for rotating the expander and also for operating the feeding means.

The combination of a cylinder holder, a carriage, an expanding tool mounted on the carriage in coperative relationship with the cylinder holder, means for imparting forward movement to the expander, means for imparting rearward movement to the expander, and a means operatively connected to the expander and having provisions for ope atively connecting with either of said movement imparting means.
