Definitions
- This invention has relation to an-explosive for small-arms, being particularly adapted for sportsmen, as it gives 01f considerable less smoke than black powder and the recoil is greatly dimished, all other conditions being equal.
- the explosive is not as dangerous as nitrous or dense powders and is capable of being pressed into a shell, so as'to occupy the same space of the highly-explosive dense powders.
- the powder is prepared by mixing chlorate of potash and pith ofcornstalks in about the proportions hereinafter stated. Any cellulose material the full equivalent of cornstalk-pith may be employed.
- the pith and chlorate of potash are finely grounder pulverized and are mixed in about the proportion of one pint of chlorate of potash to two and one-half pints of pith.
- To this mixture is added the white of eggs in sufficient quantity to makea plastic mass. This mass is allowed to dry and is then crushed or reduced to granular form of required fineness and is ready for use.
- An explosive consisting of chlorate of potash, cellulose and white of eggs, in about the proportions specified.
- An explosive consisting of chlorate of potash, pith of cornstalks, and white of eggs, in the proportions about as specified.
Description
UNITED STATES Patented September 22, 1903.
PATENT FFICE.
I/VLLLIAM M. SPORE, OF ARGENTA, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 739,356, dated September 22, 1903. Application filed May 29. 1903- Serial No. 159,385. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MOSES SPORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Argenta, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Explosive Compounds, of which the following is aspecific'ation.
This invention has relation to an-explosive for small-arms, being particularly adapted for sportsmen, as it gives 01f considerable less smoke than black powder and the recoil is greatly dimished, all other conditions being equal.
The explosive is not as dangerous as nitrous or dense powders and is capable of being pressed into a shell, so as'to occupy the same space of the highly-explosive dense powders.
The powder is prepared by mixing chlorate of potash and pith ofcornstalks in about the proportions hereinafter stated. Any cellulose material the full equivalent of cornstalk-pith may be employed. The pith and chlorate of potash are finely grounder pulverized and are mixed in about the proportion of one pint of chlorate of potash to two and one-half pints of pith. To this mixture is added the white of eggs in sufficient quantity to makea plastic mass. This mass is allowed to dry and is then crushed or reduced to granular form of required fineness and is ready for use.
Having thus described the invent-ion, what is claimed as new isl 1. An explosive consisting of chlorate of potash, cellulose and white of eggs, in about the proportions specified.
2. An explosive consisting of chlorate of potash, pith of cornstalks, and white of eggs, in the proportions about as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM M. SPORE. [L. s]
