Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO JASON I. IRVING, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
ARTIFICIAL FUEL. I
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 374,679, dated December 13, 1887.
Application filed February 18, 1887. Serial No. 228,025. (No'specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JASON I. IRVING, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and useful ID1- provement in Fuel, of which the following is a specification. Y
My invention relates to improvements in artificial fuel; and it consists in the compounding of coal-dust and fine coal with Indian-corn meal, flour, or other gelatinous substances and unslaked lime and nitrate of potassa, in the following proportions: to one ton of coal-dust thirty pounds of Indian-corn meal, ten pounds of unslaked lime, and one pound of nitrate of poiassa. The whole is suffioiently moistened to be kneaded like bread-dough. It may then be made into convenient size for any required fuel, either by pressing in molds or by other mechanical device.
The following' is the operation of preparing my improved fuel: I compound and mix the same as above stated, then form the fuel as re quired, and place to dry either inovens or b other convenient process of drying.
I am aware that when properly mixed and placed in the fire over the heated grate it will cake and become like coke in appearance, and may be used in that form to some advantage, when it is simply compounded without forming into blocks orlumps for fuel. I therefore do not confine myself to any form of fuel blocks or lumps.
I am also aware that some of the ingredients have been employed in the manufacture of fuel; but,
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
Cornmcal or other grain-flour, lime, and nitrate of potassa, in combination with coaldust for the purpose of causing the required cohesion, the whole being composed and prepared as and for the purposes set forth.
JASON I. IRVING.
