APPLICATION IILED NOV. 17, 1902.

UNITED" STATES I iatented September 15, 1903 "PATENT- OFFICE.
CHARLES r. PAIGE Ann STUART H. ULLRIOH, Or COLORADO SPRING COLORADO.
COMBINED MATC H BOX' HOLDER AND SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,273, datet l september 15, 1903. Application filed November 17, 1902. Serial No. 131,659. (No model.)
To all whom it may, concern.-
Be it known that we, CHARLES E. PAIGE and STUART H. ULLRIOH, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Colorado Springs, in the county of ElPaso and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Match Box Holder and Safe; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip-' tion of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Qur invention relates to improvements in a combined match box holder and safe; and it consists of the features hereinafter described place. This section is taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the device.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate the body of the device, formed with front, top, and side walls, (designated 5, 5, and 5, respectively.)
The lower part of the device projects for-' wardly, as shown at 5 forming an auxiliary chamber communicating with the main chamber and open at the top to permit access for removing matches. The front wall 5 is out off or shortened at the bottom to allow the matches Sin the box 17 to pass from the main chamber to the auxiliary chamber. The body of the device is hinged at the top to the rear wall 5 as shown at 5 This is the only connection between the body of the device and the rear wall, and by virtue of this construction the body part is allowed to swing away from the rear wall, as shown in Fig. 1. This rear part 5 is secured to a suitable support,
as the wall of a room, to which a nail, a screw,
or other suitable fastening device 6 having a head is applied. This rear part is provided with an opening 7 large enough to allow the head of the fastening device to pass through.
From this opening leads a narrow horizontal slot 7 a to a narrow vertical slot 7. 7 and 7 are of sufficient width to allow the shank of the fastening device to pass freely, but are too narrow to allow the head of the fastener to pass. The vertical slot is in the center of the part 5 measuring horizontally. It is also above the vertical center, whereby the device will be stable when mounted on the fastener 6. k
' To place the device in position, it is only necessary to place the back part 5 in posi- The slots I tion to allow the fastening-head 6 to pass through the opening 7. The device is then moved laterally to cause the shank of the fastener to pass through the slot 7 into the slot 7. The gravity of the device will then cause it to assume the position shown in Fig. 1.
To insert the match-box 8, it is only necessa y"toswing the body of the device upfi rdly, as shownin Fig. 1, toahorizontal or approximately horizontal position. The box ing from the lower part of the device and forming an open auxiliary chamber communicating with the main chamber, and a plate forming one of the walls of the device, to which the body is hinged at the top, the said plate beingadapted to be attached to a suitable stationary'support.
2. A combined match box holder and safe comprising a back plate adapted to be secured to a suitable stationary support, a body part adapted to hold a box of matches, said body part being hinged at the top to the back plate and arranged to swing away from the same and upwardly to permit the insertion of a box of matches, the said body part having an open, forwardly-protruding bottom part forming an auxiliary chamber communicating with the main chamber, the front wall of the device being sufficiently short to allow the matches to pass from the main to the auxiliary chamber, substantially as described.
3. A combined match box holder and safe comprising a back plate provided with an opening sufficiently large to receive the head of a fastening device, a narrow opening or slot extending horizontally from the main opening and communicating with a narrow vertical slot or opening, the main opening being adapted to receive the head of a fasteningdevioe and the slots communicating therewith being of sufficient width to allow the shank of the fastener to pass through pre- CHARLES F.
