CHARLES W. CHAMBERLIN, F LANARK, ILLINOIS.
MATCH BOX AND SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,372, dated August 8, 18E2 Application tiled December 23, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES WoR'rHING- TON CHAMBERLIN, of Lanark, in the countyY of' Carroll and State ot' 11lincis,'have invented a new and Improved Match box and Safe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object ot' my invention is to provide a new and improved box for putt-ing up matches l'or the trade, which box can be easily converted into a match-safe.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part oi' this specification, in which similar letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the tigures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved match box and sa fe, showing the manner in which it is closed andput upforthe trade as a match-box. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same, showing the cover-Hap torn ott', so as to adapt it to be used as a matchsai'e.
A blank is cut out of medium or stift' paper to l'orm a box, A, for receiving matches, the back B being extended above the box in any desired plain or ornamental shape. A Hap, C, provided with end wings, D, is creased so as to lit over the top ot' the box and to form the cover, the front 0l' the box beingprovided with a perforated longitudinal or horizontal line, F, or a line parallel with the cover near the top. The cover is folded over the top of the box A, and the end wings, D, are folded over or inside the ends G of the box, and when in this position the cover is pasted or attached to the .back B by means of a gummed strip or by means of the revenue-stamps, or in any other suitablemanuer. Theboxcontainsthematohes (Model.)
in au upright position. In this manner the matches are put up for the trade.
To remove the matches from the box the cover or folded flap G is torn oft' along the perforated line F, whereby. the revenue-stamps will be destroyed. The back sprovided with an aperture, H, a loop or other suitable device for hanging it on the wall, &c.,so that the box can be used as a match-safe.
To keep the matches in upright position, and to prevent them from falling, so that even the last match can be grasped conveniently, the box A is subdivided into compartments by means of aseries of transverse partitions, J.
The front ot' the box A is provided'with a strip, K, of sand-paper, or is roughenedin any other suitable manner for igniting the matches. The space above the box A on the back Bean be used for advertisements or can be ornamented in any suitable or desired manner.
The back may be enlarged, as shown, orca-n be made the size ot' the box only, with a slight projection at the upper edge, which upper part ot' the back is to he turned down on the box, and the cover C is to be folded overit.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An upright match-box having a line of perforatious, F, an extended top-apertured back, B, a flap, C, pasted to said back, and having wings I) folded over box-ends G, whereby the matches may be always suspended in a. vertical position and reached from the top, as described.
CHARLES WORTHINGTON CHAMBERLIN.
