PATENT OFFICE.
STOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,993, dated September 15, 1903.
Application filed September 8, 1902. Serial No. 122599. (No model.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK D. FOOTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stools; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, as follows:
Figure 1 shows a. perspective View of the stool; Fig. 2, a view of the stool folded; Fig. 3, a similar view from the rear of Fig. 2 and with one of the legs adjusted so that the folded stool may be used as a cane. Fig. 4 shows a section on the line 4 4 in Fig. 5. Fig. 5 shows an elevation of the joint.
The legs A and B are connected by the joint formed of the parts a and I). These parts are connected by the pivot D. They have a central portion a and b of approximately the thickness of the legs. This forms what may be termed a scissors joint-a joint wherein the legs generate as swung in a substantially coincident or parallel plane. the parts a and b are the ferrules a and b in which the legs proper are secured. Extending from either of the parts a or b is a lug c. This lug is provided with a cavity 0. (See dotted line.) A clamp-ring c is secured to the bolt c and is adapted to be drawn into the cavity 0 by the action of the bolt 0 A thumb-nut is arranged to operate on the bolt to draw the ring 0 into the cavity. The leg 0 is passed through the ring 0 and clamped in adjustment as the ring 0 When the apparatus is used as a stool, the ring is clamped as shown in Fig. 1. When the stool is folded and it is desired to utilize the folded On the ends of stool fora cane, the leg 0 is adjusted as shown in Fig. 3.
It will be noticed that the joint permits the legs to be folded to a parallel relation, as shown in Fig. 2; that the leg 0 preferably occupies the upper crotch between the legs A and B; that the plane generated by the leg 0 when it is swung on its pivot is preferably at substantially right'angles to the planes generated by the legs A and B, and that the clampbolt 0 performs the function of the clampbolt and the pivot for the leg 0.
What .I claim as new is 1. In a stool the combination of the legs A and B; the joint for said legs comprising the parts a and I); having the central portions 0. and b and the ferrule ends a and 6 a clampring secured to said joint; and a third leg in said ring.
2. In a stool the combination of the legs A and B; the joint for said leg comprising the parts a and I); having the central portions a and b, and the ferrule ends a and 19 a clampring secured to said joint and a third leg in said ring and arranged to extend through the upper crotch formed between'the legs A and B when open. p
3. In a stool the combination of the legs A and B; the joint connecting said legs; a ring secured thereto by a clamping-bolt, the clamping-bolt forming a pivot for the ring as well as a clamping means; and a leg arranged in said ring and adapted to swing with said bolt as a pivot and to be clamped in said ring by said bolt.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. FRANK D. FOOTE.
Witnesses:
H. O. LORD, MARGARET SULLIVAN.
