My invention relates to hydraulic air-compressors of the type illustrated in Letters Patent No. 543,411, dated July 23, 1895, and granted toOharles H. Taylor, and more particularly to an air-compressor in which a series of horizontal air-bars of an inverted V shape in cross-section and communicating at each end with asubmerged air-chamber are used for entraining theairin the head of the descending column of water, as illustrated in Letters Patent No. 7 04,059, dated July 8, 1902, and granted to William J. Linton.

My improvement, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, consists in closing the lower sides of the air-'bars-except for narrow longitudinal openings which are left, preferably, along each of their two edges. I do this by inserting in the bottom of each air-bar a screen or bottom plate 1? P, somewhat narrower than the bottom of the air-bar, so as to leave a narrow opening on each side thereof for the passage of the air into the water. These bottom plates maybe secured in placeby any suitable means, as by gussets g g, bent, as shown, and riveted The object of my invention is torenderj at intervals to the edges of the plates and the lower edges of the air-bars. It will be understood,liowever,thatldo notlimitmyself to this means for closing the bottoms of the air-bars, for it is obvious that the same thing can be accomplished in other ways-as, for instance, by bending over one side of the air-bars, left wider for the purpose, and, if desired, cutting longitudinal openings for the air along the angle thus formed, thus practically converting the air-bars into air-pipes closed to the action of the water flowing through the apparatus except for one or more slits along their lower sides. The effect of this construction is to throttle the air after it enters the air-bars from the air-chamber, and thereby cause its more even distribution throughout the length of the air-bars. Thus every part of the body of flowing water is supplied immediately and within a limited horizontal space with its proper volume of air, and, as the result, the efficiency of the apparatus is greatly increased.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a hydraulic air-compressor, a series of horizontal air-bars communicating at their ends with a submerged air-chamber and means for throttling the air after it enters the air-bars from the air-chamber to secure its more even distribution throughout the length thereof, substantially as described.
2. In a hydraulic air-compressor, a series of horizontal air-bars communicating at their ends with a submerged air-chamber and closed to the action of the water flowing through said compressor except for one or more narrow openings along the lower sides thereof, substantially as described.
3. In a hydraulic air-compressor, a series of horizontal air-bars substantially closed throughout their length except for one or- 5. In a hydraulic air-compressor, an airbar and means for throttling the air after it enters each end of said air-bar from an airchamber, for the purpose specified.
6. In a hydraulic air-compressor, a series of air-bars which are in the form of an inverted V in cross-section and are closed along their bottoms except for narrow openings on each side thereof.
