PATENT OFFICE.-
IGNATZ PFORTNER AND GUSTAVE A. PFORTNER, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
SMGKING-PlPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,235, dated September 8, 1903. Application filed November 22,1902. Eerial No. 132,429. (No model.)
To (0N whom, it may concern:
Be itknown that we, IGNATZ PFORTNER and GUSTAVE A. PFORTNER,CitiZenS of the United States, residing in the borough of the Bronx, city of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking- Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to smokingpipes, and has for its objects the construction of a pipe which shall embody the substantial advantages of the well-known Persian hookah, but shall be of simple construction, compact dimensions, and very small cost.
According to our invention we provide an absorption-chamber between the bowl and stem, this absorption-chamber having walls of absorptive material, and according to our invention we ultilize the well-known absorptive power of corncob and make the absorption-chamber of this inexpensive material. The smoke as it is drawn from the bowl enters this absorption-chamber and is not only deprived of readily-condensible vapors, but also acquires the peculiar flavor given by the corncob.
Our invention also includes various improvements in details of construction, as will appear from the following description of the accompanying drawings, illustrating a smoking-pipe embodying our invention, and from the claims in which our invention is particularly set forth.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a smokingpipe embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is an exterior view of the same.
The tobacco-bowl a is shown as made of corncob and provided with a reed outlet 1), and aplug c of elastic material, preferably cork, is secured to the bowl or reed and constitutes the means of connection with the absorption-chamber (Z. This absorption-chamber is made of a piece of cornoob having a uniform bore, and the plug a enters this bore at the upper part of the absorption-chamber. At the lower part of the absorption-chamber d a tight plug g is secured, and is provided with a connecting-pin e, which enters and is secured in a base f, the lower portion of the corncob absorption-chamber (Z resting upon the top of the base. This construction is exceedingly simple and inexpensive and permits the removal of the bowl and the exposure of the fullbore of the absorption-chamber for the purpose of cleaning.
A hollow plug h is inserted in the absorption-chamber at a point intermediate of its length, and this plug receives at its outer end the flexible stem 45, and the mouthpiecej is secured at the outer end of the flexible stem '6.
It is obvious that modifications may be made in the construction shown in the drawings and above particularly described within the spirit and scope of our invention.
WVhat we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A smoking-pipe comprising a tobaccobowl and an absorption-bowl separable from each other, the absorption-bowl having a chamber therein with walls of absorptive material, and the tobacco-bowl having a stopper entering and closing the absorption-bowl,and a stem and mouthpiece having a passage therethrough connected to such absorptionchamber.
2. A smoking-pipe comprising a tobaccobowl and a corncob absorption-bowl separable from each other, the corncob absorptionbowl having a chamber therein and the tobacco-bowl having a stopper entering and closing the absorption-chamber,and a flexible stem and mouthpiece having a passage therethrough connected to such absorption-chamber.
3. A smoking-pipe comprising a bowl having a projecting plug of elastic material with a smoke-orifice therein, an absorption-chamber of uniform bore throughout its length and adapted to receive the elastic plug of the bowl at one end of such bore and tightly closed at the other end thereof, a base secured to the absorption-chamber, a hollow plug entering such absorption-chamber at a point intermediate of its length, and a flexible stem and mouthpiece, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have aflixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
