PATENT OFFICE.
ADJUSTABLE GAS-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,199, dated September 8, 1903.
Application filed December 16,1902. Serial No. 135,417.
T0 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN FREDERICK WV. Jos'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Adjustable Gas- Check, of which the following is a specification.
One object of the present invention is to provide a simple, reliable, and durable plural-hole gas-check.
Another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable gas-check which will operate also to supply a pilot-light.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of a Bunsen or airmixing tube fitted with an' adjustable gascheck embodying features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same, partly in section. Fig. 4: is a perspective view showing the parts of the gas-check detached. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the gas-check, and Fig. 6 is a top or plan view illustrating a modificati on of the invention.
In the drawings the check consists of two members 1 and 2, of which one is fixed and the other rotatable in respect to it. One of these members, in the present instance the rotatable one 1, is provided with a diametrical slit 3, and the other, 2, is provided with a bar 4:, arranged transversely across an opening in it. There is, therefore, on each side of the bar 4 a gasway. \Vhen the parts 1 and 2 are arranged concentrically, it is obvious that they may be rotated in such a way that the slit 3 coincides with the bar 4:, and in such case there is no passage-way for gas, and they maybe turned so that the slit 3 is more or less out of coincidence with the bar 4, and in such case two gasways are provided, one on each side of the bar, as shown in Fig. 3, and these gasways may be of larger or smaller area, according to the relative position of the slit and bar. As shown in Fig. (i, the slit is generally S-shaped, so that when it is in substantial coincidence with the bar small openings are afforded, which serve to feed a pilot-light.
(No model.)
As shown in the drawings, the parts 1 and 2 are generally of the form of frusta of cones capable of being nested together. The part 1 at its base is fitted with a flange 5 and with an operating-handle 6, and the member 2 is fitted with two flanges 7 and 8, having between them a cylindrical surface. 8 may be fitted with a locking projection 9. 10 is a collar inwardly flanged at its top and outwardly flanged at its base and provided with an opening 11, through which the handle 6 extends. The collar is fitted over the memher 1 so that its top flange engages the flange 5 on the member 1 and the flange 5 clears the flange 7 on the part 2, so that between the conic sections A and B a gas-joint is provided when the bottom flange on the collar and the flange 8 are drawn together. To accomplish this and as shown in the drawings, the Bunsen tube 12 is internally beaded, as at 13, and the bottom flange on the collar 10 abuts upon the bead. The lower part of the Bunsen tube is internally threaded and also grooved, as at 14. The groove serves to engage the projection 9 and prevent rotation of the member 2.
15 is a thimble adapted for application to a supply-pipe screwed into the Bunsen tube. It serves to draw the bottom flange on the collar 10 and the flange 8 together, and in this way it draws the flange 5 toward the flange 7 and makes a tight joint between the conic sections A and B.
- It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modifications may be made in details Without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinabove set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
Having thus described the nature and objects of the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An adjustable gas-check consisting of two members rotable in respect to each other about a common axis and whereof one is provided with an opening having a bar extending transversely of it and whereof the other is provided with a slit adapted to be turned into coincidence with the bar and out of coincidence with the bar to provide plural gas- The flange ways of variable area substantially as described.
2. An adjustable gas-check consisting of two members rotatable in respect to each other about a common aXis and whereof one is provided with an opening having a bar extending transversely of it and whereof the other is provided with an S-shaped slit adapted to be turned into substantial coincidence with the bar to provide a pilot-light and out of substantial coincidence with the bar to provide a gasway on each side of the bar for the purposes set forth.
3. An adjustable gas-check consisting of the combination of nested members having the form of conic frusta and whereof one is provided with a slit and a flange and a handle and the other is provided with an opening having a bar and with two flanges and acylindrical portion, a collar inwardly flanged at its top and outwardly flanged at its base and provided with an opening for the handle, a Bunflange, a collar engaging one of said flanges, a Bunsen tube having an internal flange for engaging the collar, and means engaging the Bunsen tube for holding the flange on the bottom member to tighten the gas-joint, substantially as described.
5. An adjustable gas-check comprising the combination of a member of the form of a conic frustum an opening and a bar and two flanges with an interposed cylindrical part between them and having a locking projection, a second member of the form of a conic frustum having a slit and a flange and a handle, a collar internally flanged at its top for engagement with the flange on the last-mentioned member and externally flanged at its bottom for cooperation with the flange at the base of the first-mentioned member, an openin g in the collar for the passage of the handle, a Bunsen tube grooved for engagement with the locking projection and flanged for engagement with the flange at the bottom of the collar and a thimble screwed into the Bunsen tube to engage with the flange on the lower member that carries the bar, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
