PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,023, dated September I, 1903. Application filed February 11, 1903. Serial No. 142,906- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we,DE WITT C. FULTON and DAVID LAwsoN, citizens of the United States,
residing at New Market, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in puzzles; and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device requiring the exercise of considerable skill and ingenuity to solve the same.
The invention consists in providing a circular casing having a concentric receptacle therein divided into a series of compartments which have inlets in the periphery of the receptacle whereby any one of a series of balls arranged within the casing can be admitted thereto.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of our invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section therethrough.
Referring to the drawings by letters and unmerals of reference, 1 is a circular casinghavingaconcentric receptacle2inthe centerthereof, forminga circular passage 3 between it and the side of the casing. This receptacle has a cover 4: thereon and is divided into a suitable number of compartments A, B, O, D, E, and F by means of partitions 5. The top'of each compartment has an opening 6 therein whereby the interior of said compartment can be readily inspected. An opening 7 is formed in the side of each compartment and is of such size as to permit one of a series of balls 8 to roll therethrough. The tops of the different compartments are preferably of different colors, and the balls provided are equal in number to the different compartments within the receptacle 2. Each ball is also colored to correspond with the top of one of the compartments.
To solve the puzzle, all of the balls are placed within the passage 1 and are then so manipulated as to bring said balls under the portions of the top 4 which correspond in color therewith. Said balls must be located within their respective compartments at the same time, and it will therefore be understood that it will be extremely difficult to keep the ball, for example, in compartment 0 while the proper ball is being rolled into compartment F.
In the foregoing description we have shown the preferred form of our invention; but We do not limit ourselves thereto, as we are aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and we therefore reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of our invention.
Having thus f nlly described the invention,
- what is claimed as new is- In a device of the character described, the combination with a circular casing; of a concentric receptacle therein oomprising a top having apertures therein, a side having passages therethrough, and partitions within, and extending from the center to the side of the receptacle and forming dependent compartments, an opening in the top and a passage in the side communicating with each compartment, and movable objects of different colors normally within the circular passage and adapted to be moved into their respective compartments, those portions of the top above the compartments being colored to correspond with the objects.
