SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,863, dated September 1, 1903.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY A. OWEN and OSCAR L. OWEN, citizens of the United States, residing at \Vhitinsville, in the county of \Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shipper-Locks for Drawing-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improve- IO ments in automatic shipper-locks for drawing-frames, and more particularly to mechanism intermediate the shipper and the gearcovers of the drawing-frame operated by the opening or closing of the gear-covers to lock or unlock the belt-shipper.
In drawing-frames the draft and change gears connected to the front roll-shaft are inclosed in pivoted covers secured in their closed position by spring-pins or other means.
These gear-covers may be opened by the oper ator to coil or change the gearing. As heretofore constructed there was great danger to the operator by the starting up of the machine from the belt-shipper being free to move when the machine was stopped.
The object of this invention is to lock the belt-shipper when the machine is stopped with the belt on the loose pulley. The operator may now open the gear-covers to oil or change 0 the gearing without danger of the machine starting from an accidental movement of the belt-shipper.
To accomplish this object, our invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of mechanism connecting the belt-shipper lock with the gear-covers, and by this mechanism the opening of the gear-covers locks the shipper and the closing of the covers unlocks the shipper, as will be more fully de- 0 scribed hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig. 1, partly in section, showing the fixed casing supported on the frame, the locking-bolt and its connection with the top gear-cover pivoted to the fixed casing, the front gear-cover pivoted to the frame, and the pivoted weighted arm connecting the front gear-cover with the lockingbolt, the belt and pulleys being shown in broken lines. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the shipper-bar and shipper looking from the back, showingthe locking-plate secured to the shipper-bar and the lower end of the locking-bolt.

The front gear-cover d is pivotally secured to the frame of the machine by the bracket d in engagement with the end a of the arm e and has the cam d receive the lower end of the locking-bolt e when the belt is thrown onto the loose pulley b by the shipper.
In the operation of our improved shipperlock the movement of either of the gear-covers to open or close controls the locking mechanism of the shipper-lock. When the operator wishes to gain access to the gears 90.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a drawing-frame having gear-covers, a shipper-bar and shipper, a locking-bolt, and locking mechanism connecting the gear-covers with the locking-bolt to lock the shipper when the gear-covers are opened, for the purpose as described.
2. In a drawing-frame having gear-covers,
a shipper-bar, a belt-shipper on the bar, a
locking-bolt supported in a bearing on a fixed casing, a gear-cover pivoted to the fixed casing and having a cam in contact with the upper end of the locking-bolt, and a lockingplate secured to the shipper-bar and having an opening to receive the lower end of the locking-bolt when the gear-cover is opened to lock the shipper, as described.
3. In a drawing-frame having gear-covers, a shipper-bar and belt-shipper, a locking-bolt, means for supporting the locking bolt, a locking-plate secured to the shipper-bar and having an opening to receive the locking-bolt, a gear-cover pivotally secured to the frame The machine mayverses of the machine and having a cam, and a piv oted arm or lever secured near its center to the frame, one end engaging with the cam on the gear-cover and the other end engaging with the locking-bolt to lock the belt-shipper when the gear-cover is opened, as describ'ed.
4. In a shipper-lock for drawing-frames, the combination of the following mechanism: the gear-cover 0 having the cam c, the weighted arm 6 pivotally supported on the frame, the locking-bolt e provided with the pin a engaging with the slotted end 6 of the arm 6, and the shipper-barf having the lockingplate f for locking the bolt 6 when the gearcover is opened, as described.
