TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CQNCERN:
Beit known that I, CHARLES H. EIBREE, of West Dresden, in the county of Yates,V and -State of New York, have invented ascertain new and useful Improvement in Gates; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full and exa-Ct description thereof, reforencevbcing had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
Figure l is an elevation of a farm-gate, arranged in my improved manner. Figure 2, a perspective view of the swivelled suspension-loop, and the` end of the rail that `rests therein. Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
My improvement belongs to that class of-gates that slide part way back', and then swing around.
The invention consists in providing the `swivclled suspension-loop, holdingthe gate, with'an extendedstem drilled with holes, whereby said gate may be elevated or lowered; and in providing it wthinelin'ed slots in -the sides, for the insertion 'and removal of the friction-roller at pleasure, without withdrawing the axis from the roller.
As represented in the drawings, A A are two-posts, between which rests the gate B. This gateis composed of the usunl rails and battons, aa, b b. The rear post yis provided with a projection or bearing, c, which sustaius the swivelled suspension-loop C, through which the upper rail ofthe gate runs. This loop consists of two sides, el d, 4with a friction-roller, f, at the bottom, and an extended stem, g, which forms the axis, extending up through the projection c, `and `provided with a series of holes, 71, h, in any ofwhich rests a pin, I prefer to insert va washer, k, under the pin z', on top the projection c, toprevent wear and lessen friction. The axis of the friction-roller is inserted in inclined slots, Z l, as clearly represented, by which means itis readily removable at anytime without withdrawing said axis from the roller. A
A great variety of swivelled-roller'devices for gates have before been known. The great advantage of this 4over others is, that the extended stem g allows the gate to be elevated or lowered, when desired, with the-greatest facility, and the inclined slots, Z allowthe roller to be inserted or removed at any time when it is desired to apply or remove the gate, without; detachingthe stem from its bearing. v i A I am not aware that these' combined features have ever before been employed with n' swivelled suspension-loop, as above set forth.l The suspending of the loop, instead of locating it on the bearing c, is not only more advantageous in practice, but I avoid the use'o` double posts at the e'nd where the gate swings..
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure Aby Letterslatent, is-
The arrangement and use -of the adjustable extension-stem g andthe inclined slots Z l with the swivelled suspension-loop C, operating in the manner and for the purpose herein Aset forth.
In witnessfwhereof, I have hereunto Vsigned Amy name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
