TRACTION-ENGINE.
SPECIFIGATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 736,931, dated August 25, 1903.

Be it known that I, FRANK S. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Westbend, in the county of lVashington and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traction- Engines; and I do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
10 The improvements consist in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed, the object of the in- 1 5 vention beingto provide traction-engines having normally horizontal boilers adjustable to various angles, so as (to maintain a proper level of water therein regardless of inequality of surface upon which they may stand or travel, whereby straining of said boilers or overheating of fines therein is avoided.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a diagram representing a partly-sectional side elevation of a traction-engine made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a view of a portion of the engine, partly in section, as indicated by lines 2 2 in the third figure, and Fig. 3 a transverse sectional view of said engine, this view being indicated by lines 3 3 in the first Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates the rear axle, B the fire-box, and O the normally horizontal boiler of a tractionengine.
Inhorizontalpivotconnectionwithafire-box bracket D is a reach E, connected by a strap F and a vertical pivot-pin G with the front axle H of the engine. The forward end of the reach is upwardly extended in the form of a rack I, and this rack meshes with pinion J, fast on a spindle K, having its hearings in brackets LM, that depend from the front end of the boiler, to which they are made fast. The rack-pinion J is housed in the bracket L, its entrance thereto being through a side opening in the same that is closed by a screwplug N, as shown in Fig. 3.
Fast on the spindle K, adjacent to the bracket M, is a worm-wheel P in mesh with a worm-pinion Q, fast on an inclined rod R,
that has its bearings in said bracket M and another bracket S, connected to the boiler.
A stop-collar T and a hand-wheelU are made fast on the rear portion of the rod R, and said rod is turned to adjust the boiler C to various 5 5 angles, according to the nature of the surface upon which the engine stands or is traveled, the adjustment being made to maintain a proper level of water in said boiler.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A traction-'engi ne having a normally horizontal boiler, a reach in pivotal connection with the fire-box and front axle of the engine, the pivots being at right angles to each other and the forward end of the reach upwardly extended in the form of arack; a spindle suspended in bearings from the boiler, a rackengaging pinion fast on the spindle, awormwheel also fast on the spindle, a rod arranged to turn in bearings with which said boiler is provided, and a worm-pinion fast on the rod in mesh with the worm-wheel.

Atraction-engine havinganormallyhori- 7 5 zontal boiler, a reach having horizontal pivot connection with a fire-box bracket and vertical pivot connection with the front axle of the engine, the forward end of this reach being upwardly extended in the form of a rack; brackets depending from the boiler, a spindle having its bearings in the brackets, a rackengaging pinion fast on the spindle and housed in one of said brackets, a worm-wheel also fast on said spindle, a rod having its 8 5 bearings in the outermost of the aforesaid brackets and another bracket with which said boiler is provided, means in connection with the rod to facilitate turning of the same, and a worm-pinion fast on said rod in mesh with the worm-wheel.
