WALTER HARLING, OF BLAINE, YVASHINGTON.
ADJUSTABLE STRAP FOR ECCENTRICS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 736,847, dated August, 18, 1903.
Application filed May 2, 1903. Serial No. 155.361- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that LWALTEE HARLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blaine,
in the county of Whatcom and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Straps for Eccentrics, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in adjustable straps for eccentries; and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which may be adjusted upon the eccentric to take up wear thereon without the necessity of first removing the strap from position upon the eccentric.
The invention consists in providing a strap formed of two substantially semicircular sections, each of which is provided with a groove and a tongue at opposite sides, and the two sections are so located that the tongue of one section will engage the groove of the other section. A wedge of novel construction is arranged within each tongue and groove for binding the two parts in proper relation to each other, and adjusting-screws are employed for moving the strap-sections into proper position.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of an eccentricstrap constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section through one side of the strap and the adjusting means employed in connection therewith. Fig. 3 is a section on line a: 00, Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the two sections of the strap; and Fig. 6 is a section through one end of the strap, showing the sections thereof secured by means of a modified form of wedge.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 and 2 are substantially semicircular sections forming myimproved eccentric-strap, and an extension 3 is formedintegral with the section 2 and is keyed or otherwise secured to a rod 4. A tongue 5 extends forward from one end of each of the sections 1 and 2, and these tongues are adapted to be slidably mounted within rearwardly-extending arms 6, having longitudinal grooves 7 therein. Inclined slots 8 are formed within the arms 6 and tongues 5 and are adapted to receive wedges of novel construction. Each wedge is formed of two partst0 wit, a tapered plate 9, having a laterally-extending ear l0, and a block 11, having a threaded stem 12, which is adjustably mounted within said ear. It will be understood that when a nut 13 is screwed upon stem 12 block 11 will be drawn toward ear 10, and the distance between the outer faces of plate 9 and block 11 will be increased, thereby imparting a longitudinal movement of the tongue 5, arranged within the arm 6, within which the wedge is seated. Adjusting-screws 14 may be arranged within the strap-sections at points adjacent to the tongues 5,and these screws are adapted to bear upon the opposite ends of said straps to space them from each other a desired distance.
In Fig. 6 I have illustrated a modified form of wedge, in which the block 15 is shown provided with grooves 16 for the reception of the walls of slot 8 in arm 6. By employing a wedge-block of this character an increased movement of the tongue 5 within arm 6 may be obtained. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, ringsection 1 may be provided with a suitable oilcup 17. To securea strap such as herein described in position upon an eccentric it is.
- When it is desired to take up wear upon either the eccentric or strap sections, it is merely necessary to unscrew the screws 14 and adjust the blocks 11 nearer the cars 10 on the tapered plates 9 until the tongues 5 have been moved longitudinally within arms 6 for a suitable distance. It will be seen that the device is extremely simple and inexpensive in construe tion, and by the use thereof it is not neces sary to remove the strap from the eccentric, as heretofore, when it is desired to adjust it upon the eccentric.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. An eccentric-strap formed of sections adapted to be placed at opposite sides of an eccentric, a Wedge for connecting the sections and adjusting them upon an eccentric, and means for securing the sections in adjusted position.
2. An eccentric-strap comprising sections adapted to be arranged at opposite sides of an eccentric, a tongue and an arm at opposite ends of each section, and means for adjustably securing the tongues and arms of the sections together.
3. In an eccentric-strap, the combination with sections adapted to be placed at opposite sides of an eccentric; of a tongue and arm at opposite ends of each section of the strap, adjustable wedges connecting the tongues and arms and adapted to adjustably secure the sections together, and means for locking said sections in adjusted position.
4. An eccentric-strap consisting of two sections adapted to be placed at opposite sides of an eccentric, a grooved arm and a tongue at opposite ends of said section, said tongues being adapted to be seated within the grooved arms, adjustable Wedges mounted within slots in the tongues and arms, and means for locking said tongues and arms in adjusted position.
5. An eccentric-strap formed of sections adapted to be placed at opposite sides of an eccentric, a grooved arm and a tongue at opposite ends of each section, an adjustable wedge in slots in each arm and tongue, and an adjusting-screw within each section and adapted to bear upon the opposite section.
6. An eccentric-strap formed of sections adapted to be placed at opposite sides of an eccentric, a longitudinally-grooved arm and a tongue at opposite ends of each section, said arms being slidably mounted in the grooves, a tapered plate mounted in inclined slots in each tongue and arm, a block slidably mounted on each plate and within said slots, a threaded stem extending from said block and engaging the plate, and means for adjusting the block upon the plate.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
