To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN G. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Hat Rack or Hanger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to hat-racks; and it consists, substantially, in the features of improvement hereinafter particularly described and claimed.

The principal object of the invention is to provide an ordinaryhatrack or hanger with simplified and effective devices or means whereby a hat or similar article may be held thereon without liability to accidental displacement, as frequently happens with ordinary hangers in use, and alsoto provide a device of this kind which is simple both in the construction and organization of the elements or parts constituting the same.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character referred to which is inexpensive to manufacture, besides being light in weight, strong and durable, and possessing the capacity for long and repeated service.

The above and additional objects are attained by means substantially such as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a. view in perspective of a hat rack or hanger embodying my improvements, the said device being shown as placedagainst a wall or similar support therefor. Fig. 2 is a Vertical sectional elevation 'on the line a: w of Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device, partly in section on the line y y of Fig. 2.

Preliminarily to a more detailed description it may be stated that in the practice of my invention I preferably employ a plate of suitable form provided with means whereby the same may be attached or secured to a wall or other support and also provided with an ordinary hook or hooks for the purpose of hanging thereon a hat or similar article. The said plate is of special construction, and movably supported thereby is a holder for the hat or similar article, also of special construction, suitable means being also employed inconnection with the supporting-plate and holder whereby the latter is held to any position to which the same may be moved or carried by the operator.

I While I have herein represented a certain preferred form or embodiment of my improved hat rack or hanger, it will be understood that I am not limited to the precise details thereof in practice, since immaterial changes may be resorted to therein coming within the scope of my invention.

Reference being had to the accompanying drawings by the designating characters marked thereon, 1 represents a plate of any suitable form provided with holes or openings 2 therein for the insertion of nails or screws 3, by which the plate may be secured to a wall or other upright support therefor. Said plate has projecting therefrom preferably two hooks 4: 5, one arranged below the other and the uppermost one of which is intended for the purpose of hanging thereon a hat or similar article of wear. Preferably the plate is formed with an upwardly-extending portion or member 6, which is ofiset at its upper end on the outer surface thereof, as indicated at 7, and in said ofiset portion is formed a transverse groove 8, in which is loosely fitted the member 9 of a loop 10 of the holder 11 for the hat which I employ in connection with my improved device. Said holder is preferably constructed of wire of suitable thickness and strength, which wire is bent at the proper point of its length to form the loop referred to,and the two branches thereof are then brought together at 12, thence at an angle indicated at 13, and finally the longer extremities of the wire are bent laterally at 14. in outwardly-curved directions, each end preferably terminating in a loop 15, by which to present a rounded or smooth surface by which the fabric of the hat or other article will not be cutor otherwise injured when turning the holder down upon the hat for the purpose of maintaining the same in place upon the hook.

In order that the holder may be caused to bear upon the hat or other article on the hook with sufficient pressure to prevent accidental displacement thereof from the hook, suitable means are employed, consisting in the present instance of a pressure device or spring-plate 16, secured at 17 to the outer face of the upwardly-extending member 6 of the plate 1, the upper end of said pressure device or spring-plate being free, while an oblong slot 18 is formed in this device or plate, the parallel portions 12 of the hat-holder passing through said slot and working between the longer edges thereof. The said pressure device or spring-plate 16 is bent outwardly, as indicated at 19, so that the same exerts a constant pressure upon the adjacent portions of the loop 10, While the latter is movably seated within the groove 8 therefor in the said ofiset portion of the member 6 of the wall-plate. Thus it will be seen that when the use of the holder is not required the same may be turned upwardly to the dotted-line position indicated in Fig. 1, and it will be held in this position, as already explained, by pressure of the said spring-plate. So, too, will it likewise be held in any intermediate position thereof, as well as when lowered, to

cause the reversely-curved portions or members 14 to embrace the sides of the crown of a claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A hat-rack comprising a plate for attach .ment to a support, said plate having a member formed with a groove therein, a holder provided with a loop having a member movably seated in said groove and constructed with branches adapted to embrace the sides of a hat, and a pressure device constructed as a guide for the holder, and adapted to exert a constant pressure upon said loop, whereby the holder is maintained in any position to which the same may be carried.

2. A hat-rack comprising a plate for attachment to a support, said plate having a member formed with a groove therein, a holder provided with a loop having a member movably seated in said groove and constructed with branches adapted to embrace the sides of a hat, and a spring-plate having a guidingconstant pressure upon said loop, whereby jthe holder is maintained in any position to i which the same may be carried.

3. A hat-rack comprising a hook or hanger and an attaching-plate therefor to a wall or other support, said plate having an extension formed near the end thereof with a transverse :groove, a hat-holder constructed with a loop movably seated in said groove, and means exerting a constant pressure on the loop,

: whereby said holder is maintained in the different positions to which the same may be carried or moved.
