JOHN F; M ULLEN OF NEW YURK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 73,632, dated January 21, 1868.
IMPROVED TOP-PROP FOR. GABEIAGES.
TO ALL WHOM, IT MAY cononnn:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. MULLEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Top-Props for Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exnct description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming a. part of this specification.
This invention consists in so forming the prop that the working of the joint up and down shall not loosen the nut by which the joint is fastened to the prop.
The drawing represents the prop attached to the carriage-top, the flange or plate, marked a, being attached to the wood by screws, as seen in the drawing. I
- bis the leather top; 0 is a thimble, which is slipped over the prop, the prop itself being seen in dotted lines; (2 is the joint of the carriage-top, e is a nut on the end of the prop, which is screwed down on to the joint, to hold the joint in place. This nut, e, is very apt to get loosened and lost, by turning the top up or down, occasioning thereby much trouble and expense. To obviate this difiiculty, I add the screw f, which enters the end of the prop, as seen in the drawing, and is screwed down tightly on to the nut e with n left-hand screwthreed, thus rendering it impossible to start the nut e by moving the joint d (or the top of the carriage) back and forth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Istent, is-- The screw f, constructed and applied substantially as and for the purpose described.
JOHN F. MULLEN.
