PATENT OFFICE.
WEDGE OR SPLITTING-TOOL FOR COAL-MINING OR OTHER PURPOSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 735,520, dated August 4, 1903. Application filed July 8, 1902. Serial No. 114,837. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDRE IvANoFF, engineer, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residingat Oharkoff, Russia, have invented a new and useful Wedge or Splitting-Toolfor Ooal-MiningorotherPurposes; andldohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in or relating to wedges or splittingtools for coal-minim g and other purposes; and it consists of a screw-actuated wedge or splitting-tool which is introduced into a hole made in the block to be broken and opened out'or expanded by turning the screw portion. By this means the inconveniences of the methods used hitherto are avoided. Thus the splitting by means of a wedge introduced into a hole bored in a coal-vein and driven in by hammering produces a great amount of dust and small particles. The explosion of dynamite certainly allows larger blocks to be obtained, but the net cost'is considerably higher. Moreover, this method cannot be used in fire-damp mines and places. In order to overcome these drawbacks, the present apparatus has been devised, which allows of large blocks being obtained at small expense, while at the same time less experienced workmen are needed.
The following is a description of the apparatus, represented in Figure 1 in longitudinal section, Fig. 2 being a section on the line A B of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a section on the line C D of Fig. 2. I
A cylinder 0. at, having a hollow end space I) b, contracting toward the outer end of the cylinder, is split longitudinally. The two parts a, a of the cylinder are driven apart by a wedge or plunger 0, movable in the space 6' and actuated by a screw d, turning in a threaded nut portion f, fixed by being set in a socket f in the cylinder and alsoby pins .g, projecting through holes g in said cylinder at or toward the rear end of the cylinder at a. The screw terminates at its outer end in a square head Z, on which is arranged a lever-arm, handle, or wheel in.
The working of the device is easily understood. A channel about a meter in depth is made in the coal-vein or material to be split or broken down. Then several holes of about eighty-five millimeters in diameter and five hundred and-fifty millimeters in depth are bored, into which the apparatus is successively introduced. The workman by operating on the arm 11; causes the wedge to ad- Vance, and" the spreading apart of the two parts of the cylinder a caused thereby forces the coal or other material to split up into large blocks.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. The combination of a split part formed with an internal socket, a wedge arranged in said split part and adapted to spread the members thereof, a screw controlling said wedge, and a non-rotative threaded part penetrated andengaged by said screw, said part being inclosed in said socket and thereby secured in said split part against movement longitudinally of the latter, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence oftwo subscribing witnesses.
ALEXANDRE IVANOFF.
