UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RALPH B. PLATT, `OF HAZLETON', PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MINERS BARS.V
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,098, dated April 22, 1873; application led January 1l, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH B. PLATT, of Hazleton, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved MinersBar, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a bar for coal-miners, to which a set of tools or points may be detachably connected, so that I make one bar suffice for all by changing the points as required for the dili'erent kinds of work, and thus save the carrying of a considerable amount of weight in changing from place to place; also a considerable expense. My invention also consists of a copper tamper, for tamping the charge for a blast, constructed as hereinafter described.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved bar with the copper 'camping-tool attached, a
. part being sectioned to show the screw point connecting them, and at the top of the bar where the tamper is commonly arranged, I have a crow-bar or a pick-bar point for the purposes of the ordinary crow-bar. Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the copper drill-point. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the pick-pointed attachment. Fig. 6 isV an end of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the steel drill-point; and Fig. Sis an end view of Fig. 7.
A is the bar, which I provide with a screwthreaded socket in the end for the connection of the different tools, which I provide with a corresponding screw-threaded projection, B, above a shoulder, C, the bar being about as much shorter than the ordinary bar as the length of the tools, which are merely as long as needed `for wear. D is a crow-bar-shaped construction of the top of the bar, which I put on the top of the bar instead of the tamper, which I propose to make of copper, so as not to strike ire while tamping the charge, and thus prevent the premature discharges, which sometimes occur. E represents `the copper tamper, which is attached to the bar A at the socket end by the shank F, which I make partly of steel, and connect the short copper shank of the tamper to it at G, so that less copper will be wasted when the tamper head is worn out. H is the copper reamng-drill, for reaming out the holes in which the charges have failed to explode; itis, like the tamper, connected to a 'short steel shank, I, which connects with the bar. K is the diamond or pickpointed tool, ot' steel 5 it is intended more particularly for use in prying down the larger pieces cracked oft', but not thrown down by the explosion. L is the steel-pointed drill-bit, for ordinary use.
Besides these, I may have other points or tools, as I may wish.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A minerls bar with a crow or pick bar form at the top, and to which miners tools or points of the different forms used are detachably connected, substantially as specilied.
2. A copper tamping-tool, E, provided with a steel shank, as shown and described.
RALPH B. PLATT.
