To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnoLF LINNEMANN, a citizen of the German Republic, residing at Berlin, Germany, Scharnhorststr 9, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Coal and Rock Mining Machine (for which I have filed an application in Germany on Feb. 10, 1923), of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide improved means for mining coal and rock.
A further object of this invention is to provide improved means for breaking portions of coal ofi the face of a vein or portions of rock off the solid rock.
The invention relates to a mechanical contrivance adapted to obtain this object in deep level mining as well as in surface or open working without the use of explosives and similar materials.
In the drawing accompanying this application and forming part thereof, a modification embodying the principle of my invention has been illustrated by way of example,

In the construction of the machine or tool as shown, the character (a) is denoting a tube, preferably made from a material of great resisting strength, such as steel; fixed to the back-end of this tube, so as to form an integral part of same, is a nut (79), in which a threaded spindle or feed bar (0) may be screwed forward and backward, for instance by means of a spanner, hand-wheel or the like, which may be placed upon the end of threaded feed bar (a) projecting from the back end of the tube (a). Inserted and guided in the fore portion of the tube is a rod and a pressure plate or step-block (f) is provided at the front end of rod (6).
The middle portion of the rod (6) is formed to wedge shape, and this wedgeshaped portion, when the rod (6) is being pushed ahead in the tube (a), is taking eifect against the inner faces of the wedgeshaped jaws (g), pressing and pushing out the jaws through Suitable apertures in the tube (a) in correspondence to the taper of the wedge-shaped portion of the shaft (0).
The rod (6) is being pushed ahead within the tube (a) by the forward movement of the feed bar (0) caused by turning the span ner or hand-wheel at its back-end.

of the feed bar (0) and the rod It is, however, quite possible also, to make the feed bar (0) act directly on the rod The operation of the tool in practical use takes place in the manner described in the following:
A hole is being bored into the coal or rock, said hole having a free width corresponding to the outside diameter of the tube (a). The jaws (g) are in alignment with the outside surface of the tube (a), so that the tool is adapted to be inserted into the hole drilled into the coal or rock. As soon as the thrustplate or step-block (f) is abutting against the bottom of the drill hole, and the feed bar (0) is being screwed further into the nut (Z2), thewedge-shaped portion of the rod (6) is pushing and forcing thejaws (g) outward, so that the cutting edges of the jaws will enter and penetrate intothe coal or rock surrounding the tube (a). During this operation the single layers of the coal or rock will crack and break up. The feed bar (0) is now being rotated further in the same sense, and through this action the tube (a) is being moved backward in the drilled hole, and, at the same time, the jaws (g), penetrated into the coal or the rock, will catch and tear along with themselves towards the entrance of the drill hole the split-off coal or rock, so that the latter may be cleared away after the removal of the coal breaking tool.
In the case under consideration it is not necessary to pick or cut the coal in the region surrounding the drill hole. The coal is being cracked, therefore, entirely without picking or cutting.
Instead of having a wedge-shaped portion provided at the rod (6) for pushing the jaws (g), a suitable lever-action may be arranged intermediate the rod and the jaws (g), without affecting in any way the principle of the present invention.
I claim:
1. In a coaland rock-mining machine, the combination with a tube adapted to be inserted into a hole drilled into the coal and jaws operatively arranged in the further portion of said tube, said jaws adapted to penetrate into the surrounding coal or rock, of a nut integrally fixed to said tube, a feed bar, a rod and a step-block, substantially as set forth.
2. In a coaland rock-mining machine, the combination with a tube adapted tube insubstantially as set forth;

In a coaland rock-mining machine, the combination with a tube, jaws arranged in the fore-portion of said tube and adapted to penetrate into the surrounding coal 01' rock, of a nut integrallyifixed tosaid tube, said tube apertured so as to permit the passage of the said jaws, a threaded feed-bar adapted to screw forward and backward in said nut, a rod arranged in front of said .feed vbar within said tube (and adaptedto slide within said tube with the forward movement of saidf-eed bar, and a step-block,
