WILLIAM K. VANDEPtSLlCE, JR, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. Letters Patent No. 73,478, dated January 21, 1868.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM K. VAXDERSLICE, Jr., of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented a new and improved Cigar-Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fulland exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved cigar-holder, so constructed as to hold the cigar firmly in place while being smoked, and also insure a free draught through the tube at all times, and with all cigars, whether rolled hard or soft. It also relates to a device by which the tube can be easily and quickly cleaned when it has become foul from an accumulation of the juice of the cigar.
To effect this, I construct a mouth-piece of amber, or any other suitable material, to the front of which are attached two curved wires, bearing at their extremities a loop or circle of the same material, and of a size sufficient to admit the cigar. A small pointed tube extends directly forward from the mouth-piece, in a lino with the axis of the aforesaid ring and wires, so as to enter the centre of the cigar when in place. The point is so attached as to be easily removed for cleaning. 7
To more fully explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, of which- Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation.
Figure 2 is an end view showing the position of the tube.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the drawings.
A is the mouth-piece of the cigar-holder, which may be constructed of one or more pieces for convenience. A thin plate, a, rests against the front end of the mouth-piece, having the tube 6 passing through and firmly attached to it. This tube screws into the mouthpiece A, thus holding it and the plate firmly. The tube 5 extends forward to a sufficient distance to enter the end of the cigar. Small openings are made in the sides of this tube, which will allow the smoke to be drawn through the centre of the cigar, thus causing it to burn evenlyv and smoke freely, which in some cigars is very difficult, especially when rolled tightly. An additional support for the cigar is had by means of the ring a, which encircles the cigar when it is in place. This ring is supported by the two curved wires d d which are firmly attached to the plate a.
In order to clean the tube when fool, I construct the point e so that it may be removed, as shown, thus allowing a. cleaner to be passed through the tube and mouth-piece.
By constructing a cigar-holder in this manner, the cigar is held inn better position than by any other holder employing a tube, while the tube, by entering the centre and end of the cigar, makes-it smoke very much more freely. with much less danger of clogging, while the adjustable point e allows it to be easily cleaned.
Having thus described my invention,I do not wish to claim broadly a cigar-holder having a tube and ring,-but I That I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cigar-holder having the perforated pointed tube 6 entering the centre, and lying in the longitudinal axis of the cigar and mouth-piece, together with the supporting-ring c and wires (Z 01, substantially as and for the purpose described.
i 2. The adjustable point e, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
WILLIAM K. VANDERSLICE, JR. [L. 5.]
