`PrVrENT OFFICE.
HAMMER FOR TINNERS USE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 734,738, dated July 28, 1903. Application filed February 20,1903. Serial No. 144,184. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ASHTON THOMAS NEI.-
` SON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Wilton Junction, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hammers for Tinners Use, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is intended to provide aconstruction of hammer for tinners use, which will be of special utility in the laying of tin roofs of the kind known as flat-lock roofs.
A common mode of uniting the adjacent sheets of tin in a tin roof of the kind mentioned is by means of interlocking flanges formed upon the meeting edges of the sheets,
put together onthe roof.
sometimes they are stepped on or otherwise subjected to blows or pressure sufficient to close the ange, and they always cause delay and annoyance unless they stand at a uniform angle, which permits them to engage each other readily and which 'also makes the engagement a locking one.
My aim in the invention has been to devise means whereby the tinner may readily remedy these defects in the locking edges of the sheets without burdeninghim with an additional tool or implement, and I accomplish this purpose by forming upon the hammer with which he is always provided while laying roofs of this kind a projecting bevelfaced ange along one ofthe vertical corners of the body of the ham mer, adapted to be forced under the bent-down portions of the locking edges and to lift them to the inclined position in which they are left by the foldingmachine.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved hammer; Fig. 2, an elevation of the same, and Fig.- 3 a sec- V tion on the line `3:3 of Fig. 2.
In said drawings, 5 represents the hammer proper, and `6 its handle. The hammer may be of any size or shape convenient for the purpose, and my invention is not limited in that regard.
The novel feature of the invention is shown at 7, and consists of a ange, preferably integral with the hammer and projecting from one of the vertical corners of the hammerbody. The flange is-beveled or inclined on one of its longitudinal faces, as at 8, so that it is triangular in cross-section, and its apex or edge 10 is thin or sharp and located in the plane of one of the sides 9 of the body, so
that when the hammeris laid Hat on the side on which' the ange is located the flange will be in position to be forced under the locking odge of the tin. The bevel of the flange corresponds to the angle imparted to the tin by the folding-machine. This construction enables the tinner by entering the flange 7 under any portion of the locking edge to readily and easily raise any portion thereof which has become bent down below its proper position, and he is thus furnished with a very convenient means of remedying such defects in the sheets without being obliged to carry a separate tool specially ldesigned for the purpose. The flange 7 may be located upon the side toward or away from the handle, as preferred, the former construction being indicated in broken lines at Fig. 3, and I prefer that the ange project in a direction parallel to the handle, as that enables the tinner by laying the hammer flat on its side to force the Iiange under the locking edge, the sheet supporting the hammer while the edge is being bent or pried up.
I claim- The hammer for tinners having a flange 7 projecting from one of the vertical corners of the hammer-body, such flange having one side coincident with 'the side of the body, and its other side being beveled at an angle corresponding to the angle of the locking edge of the roofing-sheet, so that it is adapted to be entered under the looking edges of the sheet-s by an endwise movement of the handle.4
