oit-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION farming part of Letters' Patent 110,734,712, ns1-.ed (my as, 190e..
i i Application iiled January 24, 1902.' Serial No.9ll18. (No model.) i i To V1f/ZZ whom t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, FREDERIOKW. I-LJAHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los `Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and `useful Oil-Burner, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to oil-burners; and some of the objects of the invention are to produce a device of this character which will be simple and cheap in construction and at the same time efficient for the purposef intended.
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus for burning oil, whereby ,a portion of the oil irstintroduced into the apparatus is utilized, and to volatilize the oil4 invention consists, essentially, in the con-r struct-ion, combination, and arrangement of v n parts, substan tially as more fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is afront elevational view,'partly g broken away, of an oil-burner embodying the Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modiy and Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate modifications of.
` the constructions before illustrated.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring tothe drawings, and particularly to Figs,1,3,and 5 thereof,tl1e reference character 1 indicates a needle or othersuitablc valve, upon the stem whereof is secured, by means of a clamp 2, a pointer or index 3, constructed to travel over a segmental or other indicator 4, having a clamp-hub 5, adapted to be movlably connected with the body portion or cas- Fig. 4t is atop plan View of the conlof a receiver or vaporizer 7, preferably constructed with a rib 8 and lugs or projections 9 to support a deflecting-plate or spreader 10 in a removable manner, and connected` with the bottom of the receiver or vaporizer 7, which bottom is preferably sloping or inclined to facilitate the deflection or spreading of heat from the burners, are depending burnerpipes 1l, carrying elbows 12, connected with burners 13, which may carry depending pipes or rods 14, connected with the oil-burning cups 15. By means of this construction the oil is admitted through the needle-valve 1 into the receiver 7, from which it passes through the burner-pipes 11 to the burners 13 and ows therethrough and down into the cups 15, whereupon the oil in the cups is ignited and the liame and the heat there- 1 from volatilizes the oil in descending through the apparatus, and the volatilized oil is burned from the orilice of the burners 13, as will be readily understood.
In order to provide a draftfor current of `air for the burners', .adiaphragin or plate 16 tion before described and shown, wherein a single pipe 18 is connected with the central portion of thevl'eceiver or vaporizer Aand is provided with an elbow 19, connected witha T 20, supporting burner-pipes21,'conliected with the burners 13, supporting the cups 15, as before described.
The operation of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following Aceive supply connections and with a burnerl explanation thereof: When .it is desired to light the burner, it is only-necessary to turn the stem of the valve 1 so that theindex 3 will pass from over the word Closed to and over the numerals 1,2, 3, and until a sufficient amount of oil shall have-been admitted into the receiver or vaporizer 7, from whence it flows down through the pipes l1 to the burners 13 and out through the burners into the cups 15, where it is ignited and the iiame` and -heat therefrom passes up around the burners and adjacent parts to volatilize the oil therein and convert the same into a gas to be burned at the orifices of the burners, as will be readily understood.
It is not desired to confine this invention to the specific construction, combination, and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and the right is reserved to make all such changes in and modification of the same as come within the spirit and scope of thenvention.
Referring tothe construction shown in Fig. t
6, there is a receiver or vaporizer 7, having a depending burner-pipe 18, located at one edge vof the bottom of the receiver and terminating or other device 26 to be used for illuminating purposes, if found desirable in practice.
The construction shown in Fig. 7 is made wholly from pipes, and the receiver or vaporizer 7 is dispensed with, and a T-head 27 isA provided, having a connection 28 with a T 29,
with which is connected a coupling 30, attached to a valve 31, having an inlet 32 for the supply-pipe, and with the T129 is connected a burner-pipe 18,-havinga reducer-v collar 33, connected to a short pipe 34, attached to an elbow 35, connected with the burner 13.
The operation of the modified forms of construction is similar to that first described, and further description thereof will not be required.
I claim- 1. A burner provided with a vaporizer having supply connections and ribs or lugs projecting laterallytherefrom, a deiecting-plate removably secured about said vaporizer by said lugs, burners connected to said vaporizer, a diaphragm mounted between vthe burners and vaporizer and sleeves insaid diaphragm depending over said burners.
2. A burner provided with a vaporizer having side and end lugs or ribs, supply connection entering one portion of the vaporizer, depending burners connected with the other portion thereof, drip-cups below the burner, a defiecting-plate extending about the vaporizer and supported on said lugs or ribs, a solid diaphragm between the burner and vaporizer and sleeves in said diaphragm extendingl over said burners.
3. A burner provided with a vaporizer having side and end lugs or ribs, supply connection entering one portion of the vaporizer, depending burners connected with the other portion thereof, drip-cups below the burner, a deliecting-plate extending about the vaporizer and supported on said lugs or ribs, a solid diaphragm between the burner and Vaporizer, sleeves in, said diaphragm extending over said burners and a valve immediately adjacent to the burner to control thesame without affecting the other burner.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK NV. H. JAHN.
