HYDROCARBON-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,824, dated December 12, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RANsoM F. RANKIN, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-Burners; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appe'rtaius to make and use the same, rel'erencebein g had to the accompa sists in the improved construction and combi-' nation of parts hereinafter more full ydescribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the wick-tube, the lower end of which is inserted into the lamp-reservoir which contains the naphtha, gasoline, or petroleum, my burner being adapted both to light and heavy oils. This wick-tube fits into another outer tube, B, which may he slid up or down upon the inner tube, A, and has an enlargement, (J, of the shape of an inverted cone, with a flat top, 0, having one or more fine apertures, 0.
Upon the top 0 of the enlargement or gasometer G is placed a' hood or cage, D, having a double series of air and draft holes, '61 and d. From the point where the wick tube enters the gasometer it is slotted or perforated, as shown at A up to its open top. The top of the outer gas-tube, B, is contracted, as shown at B, leaving a small outlet or opening into another tube, E, which I call the burner tube. This is slipped over the top of gastube B B, as clearly shown in the drawings, and has air-holes e e at its lower end, and a bridge-piece, F, at its top or month, by which fine aperturesff are'formed for the escape of the mixed gas and air into the burner-cap G, which has a transverse silt, g, for the flame.
I do not confine or limit myself to any particular construction of theburner-cap G, as
that will depend upon the purposes for which the device is to be used and in Figs. 2 and 3 I have shown burner-caps of difl'erent constructions, that represented in Fig. 2 being used when a strong heat is required, as in vapor stoves or heaters, and that shown in Fig.3 being adapted when a large and spreading flame is required whether for heating or lighting purposes. The burner-cap shown in Fig.1 will be found useful for illuminating purposes.
Having in the foregoing described the construction of myimproved yapor-burner, I shall now proceed to describe briefly its manner of operation.
By heating the outer tube, B,with a burning match or taper sufficient heat will be imparted to the inside wick-tube, A A, to generate gas from the oil held in suspension in thewick, which escapes through the slots or perforations into the gasometer or gas-chamber O and out through its apertures 0 into the cage D, where thejets of vapor are lighted by the application of a match or taper. Air is fed to the burning jets through the apertures d, and the products of combustion are carried 011" through the upper openings, d. The burning jet or jet-s within the hood or cage D cause a constant vaporization of the oil in the wicktube, and consequently a constant flow of gas or vapor through the contracted mouth B of the gas-tube, into which the perforated or slot ted end of the open w'iclx-tube is inserted. In burner-tube E this vapor is mixed with air, which enters through the openings 0 c, the mixed airand vapor escaping through the aperturesff into the burner-cap, and out through its slot or opening y, where it is ignited.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- T 1.
