To all whom i may concern,.- i
Be it known that we, JOHN W. SEAVER and THoMAs R. MORGAN, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Cleveland, Ohio, have invented certainvImprovements in Gas-Producers, of which the following is a specification. C
The object of our invention is to so construct a gas-producer as to provide for the automatic discharge of 'the ashes from the ash-hopper and the breakingup of clinkers or 'compacted masses of ashes containedin said hopper, so as to permit of the ready discharge of the same. These objects we attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a gas-producer constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan View of the same on the line a a, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view ofcertain elements of the device. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view on the line b o, Fig. 1; and Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively a side elevation and a sectional plan view illustrating a certain feature of our invention. v
The producer has a vertical cylindrical `body with heavy base-ring 1, cylindrical metal shell 2, and refractory lining 3, the upper portion of the body having a depending sealing-ring 4, which projects into the water or other sealing agent in an annular sealing-pan 5, the latter depending from the fixed covera bevel-pinion 15, which meshes with a rack 16, formed upon the annular rail 9, whereby either continuous or intermittent rotative movement can be imparted to the body of the producer. y
Suitably secured to the base-ring 1 of the producer is a depending ash-hopper 17, also by preference consisting of an annular shell made in sections `bolted together, as shown in Fig. 2, this shell being slightly conical or tapering inwardly from top to bottom and having at its lower end dependingl hooked arms 0r brackets 18, which carry an ash-supporting plate or platform 19,`located at any desired distance below the bottom of the hopper 17, so as to provide free lateral outlet for the ashes between the two. In connection with the ash-hopper and ash-supporting plate we may employ a sealing-pan 20, surrounding the lower 'portion of the`ash-hopper, as shown in Fig. 1, and adapted to contain water or other sealing agent, or the entire lower portion of the ash-hopper, the ash-supporting bed, and the posts or standards 11 may be contained within a sealing-pit of larger area, if desired.

The blast-pipe 2l is supported upon a central base-casting 27, resting upon the foundation l2, and is connected thereto by a slipjoint, such as shown in Fig. 4, the pipe having projecting lugs 2S, which are passed through slots 29, communicating with the central opening in said base-plate, the pipe being then turned so as to carry its lugs 28 out of line with the slots and into position to rest upon the base-plate or in suitable sockets therein, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
In Figs. 5 and 6 we have illustrated a plan of connecting the arms and 26 to the blastpipe which permits of the ready application or removal of said arms. In this case the blast-pipe carries a sleeve 30, which has projecting sockets 3l for the reception of the heads at the inner ends of the arms 25 and 26, the sockets being slotted for the reception of the arms and being open at the top, so that the arms can be applied or removed by a vertical movement of the same and will be secured in place without the use of bolts, nuts, or like fastenings.
The use of the stirring or disintegrating arms 26 may in some cases be dispensed with and only one of the arms 25 may be used, although it is preferable to use at least two of these arms in order to equalize the strain upon the blast-pipe, which carries the same.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- l. The combination of agas-producer having a rotatable and depending ash-hopper and an ash-supporting bed or plate located below said hopper and rotating therewith and providing a space between them, and one or more stationary arms for pushing the ashes outwardly through the space between the bottom of the ash-hopper and the ash-supporting plate as the same are rotated, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a gas-producer having a rotatable and depending.,r ash-hopper and an ash-supporting bed or plate located below said hopper and rotating therewith and providing a space between them, one or more stationary arms for pushing the ashes outwardly through the space between the bottom of the ash-hopper and the ash-supporting plate, and one or more stationary arms projecting up into the ashes in the hopper, substantially as specitied.
3. The combination of a gas-producer having a rotatable and depending ash-hopper and an ash-supporting bed or plate located below the bottom of said hopper and rotating therewith and providing a space between them,
and a fixed blast-pipe projecting up from said plate and carrying one or more arms for pushing the ashes outwardly through the space between the bottom of the ash-hopper and the ash-supporting plate, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of the body of the gasproducer having a rotatable and depending ash-hopper and an ash-supporting plate I0- cated below the bottom of said hopper and rotating therewith and providing a space between them, aud a fixed blast-pipe projecting up through the ash-supporting plate and carrying one or more arms for pushing the ashes outwardly through the space between the bottom of the ash-hopper and the ash` supporting plate and one or more arms projecting upwardly into the mass of ashes in the hopper, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the bodyof the gasproducer having a rotatable and depending ash-hopper, with an ash-supporting plate suspended from said hopper and located below the bottom of the same, so as to provide a passage for the escape of ashes between the two, substantially as specified.
6. The combination of the ash stirring or ejecting arms having enlarged heads, with a supporting structure therefor having opentopped sockets for the reception of said enlarged heads of the arms, substantially as specified.
7. The combination of the ash stirring or ejecting arms having enlarged heads, with a supporting structure therefor having opentopped sockets for the reception of said enlarged heads on the. arms, said sockets being slotted for the reception of the arms, substantially as specified.
8. The combination of the vertical blastpipe of a gas-producer having projecting lugs thereon with a base-plate having a central opening for the reception of said blast-pipe, and slots communicating with said opening for the passage of the lugs on the blast-pipe, substantially as specified.
9. The combination of the body of the gasproducer having a rotatable and depending ash-hopper and an ash-supporting-bed or plate located below said ash-hopper and rotating therewith and providing a space between them, one or more stationary 'arms for pushing the ashes through the space between the bottom of the ash-hopper and the ash-supporting bed or plate, and a stationary sealing pan or pit surrounding the ash-hopper and receiving the ashes ejected therefrom, substantially as specified.
